3 What is Dementia? Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe conditions that affect memory, communication, and the ability to perform day-to-day activities. Alzheimer s disease is one type of dementia People with dementia are ACTIVE older adults
4 What is Dementia?
5 Dementia by the Numbers 564,000 Canadians are currently living with dementia 16,000 The number of Canadians under the age of 65 living with dementia 220,000 The number of Ontarians living with dementia 937,000 The number of Canadians who will be living with the disease in 15 years
6 Among older adults with Alzheimer s disease, routine/regular physical activity can improve performance of activities of daily living, depression, mobility and balance. -Consensus Statement, Ontario Brain Institute (2013)
7 As people living with dementia access programs and services they may: Face challenges providing the documents you need Experience difficulty focusing or become overwhelmed in crowded or noisy places Have trouble communicating if they cannot remember certain words Each person living with dementia will have different needs.
8 Dementia-Friendly Strategies 1. Enhance Communication 2. Offer Appropriate Help 3. Support the Person s Reality
9 Enhance Communication Introduce Yourself Use Short, Simple Sentences Speak Clearly & Avoid Speaking Too Quickly Make Eye Contact & Speak with a Pleasant Tone
10 Enhance Communication Be Patient & Show Respect Reduce Distractions if Possible Listen and Speak TO the Person with Dementia Offer to Help
11 Environmental Considerations Signs are: o clear and simple, large print o placed at eye level o have graphics at key decision points Entrances to building are: o clearly visible and obvious o well-lit Adequate lighting is all throughout the building Flat, wide and unobstructed hallways Quiet space available Mirror location is considered- reflection recognition Consider removing unnecessary carpets/mats
12 Preferred Language USE : Person with dementia/ living with dementia Expressions Explain what is happening in the situation instead of labelling as aggressive
13 Preferred Language AVOID : Demented Acting out Aggressive behaviour Agitated Challenging behaviour Difficult/Problem behaviour Hoarder/Hoarding Violent Sundowning/Sundowner /Wandering/Wanderer
14 Learning from Minds in Motion A community-based social program of the Alzheimer Society, that incorporates physical mental and social stimulation for people with early to mid-stage signs of dementia and their care partners.
15 Minds in Motion A program of the Alzheimer Society Developed by the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia Consists of: A once-weekly, two hour program, delivered over eight weeks 1 hour of physical activity 1 hour of mentally stimulating activities Opportunity to socialize and re-engage in the community
16 Minds in Motion Up to 22 Participants in each session Fee: $20-30 per couple for the 8 weeks Physical Activity curriculum designed by the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging. Staff training available through CCAA : Functional Exercise for Dementia Volunteer program developed to support program delivery Socialization/mental stimulation activities developed by Brock University and the Alzheimer Society

19 Minds in Motion is Evidence- Based A two year pilot study was conducted to evaluate changes in physical function, physical activity, physical activity self-efficacy and well-being associated with participation in Minds in Motion program. Research conducted by the Alzheimer Society in partnership with Waterloo University Citation: Middleton, L ; Regan, K. Evaluation of the Minds in Motion Program: Physical, Mood, and Knowledge Outcomes, 2016.
20 Highlights From Our 2 Year Pilot In the 2 year pilot, 877 participants were assessed: 96% indicate they enjoy participating in Minds in Motion 95% state they would recommend Minds in Motion to others 80% have returned to the program again 90% of delivery staff & volunteers have reported an increase in their knowledge of older adults & dementia 877 new participants completed baseline evaluations 661completed both baseline & follow-up evaluations (343 people with dementia & 318 care partners
21 Evaluation Measures completed before & after MiM: Physical function (Senior fitness test) Questionnaire assessing: Physical activity (frequency, duration, and intensity) Exercise self-efficacy (based on Self-Efficacy for Exercise Scale) Well-being (based on Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale)
