1 Grade 11 June Literature Exam - MEMORANDUM Question a) The rain is wetting the ground and creating lumps of mud. (2) b) It is suggesting that it takes ordinary emotions and mixes them up, creating a tight/anxious (knotted) feeling. (2) 1.2 The realization that the person is dead. (2) 1.3 It is the idea of a rope used to hang or strangle. Here, the figurative rope is strangling due to grief and mourning. (2) 1.4 It relates because they are experiencing abstract feelings emotions that can t be handled with the normal senses. The lesson deals with the idea of sympathy, which the children relate to. (2) Question The waves are white because it is a storm and they are crashing against each other, creating splashes and foam. (1) 2.2 a) That you can either be safe and alone, or you can go through the difficulties of life with someone by your side. (2) b) Assess individual answers. (2) 2.3 a) The bird is suffering from the low temperature. (1) b) The bird is distant/isolated/separate/secluded etc. (2) 2.4 They both look on from afar, unable to be involved or assist in any way. (2)
2 Question The speakers are of society, a narrator and the man himself. The effect of this is such that the reader can view the situation from all angles, understanding (or at least hearing) everyone s point of view. (3) 3.2 It is a reminder to the reader that the man is still not dead and is calling for help. (2) 3.3 Society/his friends etc. (1) 3.4 Assess individual answers. (3) 3.5 a b c b d e f e g h I h (1) Question To present his passbook. (1) 4.2 a) Simile (1) b) It indicates what sort of movements he is making. It creates a visual image of the action. (2) 4.3 He feels imprisoned and as if he has no freedom when he has it lost within his own country. But without it, he is lost because he is unable to move around or work. (2) 4.4 The police van. (1) 4.5 a) He goes for a drive in the police van. (1) b) He is made to look like a fool, because a grown man is being locked up for not carrying a book. (2)

Classical Masculine qualities Classical Feminine qualities Macbeth Kills Has a sense of ambition and drive Feels guilt Doubts his actions and thoughts Scared by a ghost Manipulated by wife Lady Macbeth Wishes for feminine qualities to be removed Unemotional decisions Serious ambition Manipulative Able to disguise emotions Eventual Guilt Eventual Doubt Question Duncan s guards (1) 6.2 She is excited by the idea of murder, but has evidently needed to drink in order to summon up the courage and willingness to follow through with the plan. This shows us that she intends to do evil, but has a conscious that feels otherwise. (3) 6.3 Duncan s death is final, absolute and severe. (2) 6.4 Macbeth murdering Duncan. (2) 6.5 The noises are ordinary and expected at night. The two characters, however, suggest that it is almost as if everyone already knows. Nature is signaling what has happened. It is also evidence that they both have a sense of guilt and doubt as they are reacting to these noises as if from a person. (3) 6.6 Macbeth has seen Banquo s ghost and had a fit. The guests are disturbed and have apparently upset Macbeth further by asking questions. Lady Macbeth wants them to leave before Macbeth says something that may incriminate them. (3) 6.7 That when one hurts another, that hurt is going to return to them. He has killed Duncan and Banquo, and is now realizing that his blood is due to be shed. (2)
4 6.8 Macduff did not attend Macbeth s coronation or the banquet, thus Macbeth realizes Macduff might be hiding something from him and begins to distrust Macduff. Macbeth is realizing Macduff is a potential threat. (2) 6.9 The he would be Thane of Cawdor and King. (2) 6.10 He is intentionally choosing evil methods to find out more about his future. He is immersing himself in darkness and evil. This creates tension as the audience knows nothing good can come from the witches predictions. (2) 6.11 He has caused so much harm and shed so much blood, that for him to stop now would be both meaningless and as difficult as simply continuing his actions. (2)

6 Question A thief robbed him of all his money. (1) 8.2 a) He is doubting his journey and feels as if the universe is not going to assist him on his path (2) b) The crystal merchant has given up, and is resentful about the fact that his customers no longer travel up the hill to shop at his store. (2) 8.3 He introduces an outside display cabinet, begins selling tea out of the glasses and grows the store to gain a lot more profit. 8.4 He impacts his perception of the world. He influences him to be more open to change and progress. also reminds the merchant of his desire to travel to Mecca. (3) 8.5 a) To buy his flock back and return to being a shepherd. (2) b) The crystal merchant reminds him that his journey is not done and sways him toward continuing on his search for the treasure. (2) 8.6 He saw an omen in the desert of eagles fighting, which made him realise that the oasis was to be invaded by those involved in the tribal wars. He felt it was necessary to inform the chieftans in order to prepare. (3) 8.7 That if any gun that was not used, one would be used on him. (2) 8.8 Assess individual answers specifically mentions of understanding nature/observing omens/personal legend etc. (3) 8.9 Yes. The following day, the oasis was invaded and, as they were prepared, the oasis won the battle. (2)
