2 Resiliency Defined Resiliency is ability to bounce back from misfortune or change. Resilient people have something in their lives that help them overcome challenges and move on in positive ways.

5 Protective Factors Defined Characteristics, events or processes that decrease the impact of a risk factor and the likelihood of an adverse outcome. (Kazdin, 1997) Things that help guard children from unsafe or unhealthy influences Help us overcome risk factors

9 Building Your Bounce Taking Care of YOU The Devereux Early Childhood Initiative [DECI] has created a tool [Devereux Adult Resilience Survey] for adults to help strengthen their protective factors. Strengthening your own resilience and protective factors may help you handle on the job stress more effectively. In today s world, we all face risk. Spending time offsetting that risk by reflecting on and changing some of our behavior can be beneficial.
10 Devereux Adult Resilience Survey [DARS] The Devereux Adult Resilience Survey [DARS] is a 23- item checklist that reflects on an adults personal strengths. The information on the checklist can help one build upon the strengths so they can be better equipped to handle adversity and the stressors of daily life. Personal reflection: complete the DARS Survey
11 GOALS of the Devereux Adult Resilience Survey Insight to self in 4 main areas: Relationships: The mutual, long-lasting back-and-forth bond we have with others in our lives Internal Beliefs: The feelings and thoughts we have about ourselves and our lives, and how effective we think we are at taking action in life Initiative: The ability to make positive choices and decisions and act upon them Self-Control: The ability to experience a range of feelings, and express them in socially appropriate ways
12 DARS Interpretation It takes time, reflection, and practice to change any negative thoughts/behaviors we might have and to integrate new skills that are good for us. Consider areas to improve [start small] Consider: Strengths: Determine the strengths of the situation, use these as your base Goals: What do you want to work on? Call these areas GOALS not concerns Strategies: What are you going to do to address these goals
13 Strategy Practice Refer to your DARS [Devereux Adult Resilience Survey]. Focus on your strengths and choose personal goals [based upon areas in which you answered sometimes or not yet ]
14 Relationships Relationships are the mutual, long-lasting, back-and-forth bond we have with another person in our lives. Relationships MATTER and support us in: laughing more, feeling healthy, nurturing hope, feeling supported, having fun, sharing our emotions, and being honest.
15 Relationships Maya Angelou: I ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel Let s BUILD healthy relationships! Activity: I provide support to others Helping others is a benefit to them and to you. When you lend a helping hand or a listening ear to someone, you can experience increased energy and warmth. Supporting others can open our minds and can bring selfworth, greater happiness, and optimism.
16 Relationships I have a mentor or someone who shows me the way. Mentorship can improve your self-confidence, increase your motivation, and encourage optimism about future opportunities. Mentors can be like branches of our life, helping us grow and move in new directions. Take time to appreciate these people as an important part of your life s development. Activity: Thank You Notes
17 Internal Beliefs I believe that every person is born with Talent. -Maya Angelou Internal beliefs are the feelings and thoughts we have about ourselves, and how effective we think we are at taking action in life. Positive internal beliefs lay a foundation for: Setting goals and sticking to them learning from mistakes bouncing back from events/loss Accepting praise Trusting others Handling unexpected challenges Going with your instincts Shrugging off hurtful comments

20 Internal Beliefs Counting Compliments For one week count every compliment that you get whether on the Thank You Tree or verbal. Reflect about how each one made you feel. For one week give compliments you give to others and reflect how many you give and why you gave the compliment.
21 Initiative Initiative is your ability to make choices and decisions and act upon them. When faced with challenges, we often make things more difficult for ourselves by focusing on the negative, which does nothing to help the situation.
