Refer to real or simulated youth work situations when answering questions. Follow the instructions for each task. For this assessment, answer the questions for the task by either: writing your answers in the assessment or preparing and giving a verbal presentation. If you answer by writing, you may write either electronically or by hand. If you answer verbally, your assessor will write your answer(s) or may use a voice recorder. Your assessor or verifier will use the checklists in this Trainee Assessment when they observe your presentation. If you need help with this assessment, please contact your assessor. 4 Definitions Culture includes but is not limited to cultures based upon: age. class. disability. ethnicity. gender. sexual orientation. cultures within Māori, Pākehā, Pasifika and Asian groupings, including identification with a culture through birth, adoption, genealogy or whakapapa. Risk factors and protective factors are explained in the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa. Subculture includes any group of youth who identify themselves as one or more of the following: skaties, gothics, hip hop, gangs, bogans, boy/girl racers, computer nerds, academics, gamers, ravers, church groups, sporting and recreational groups, uniform groups and other subcultures or subgroups. Youth culture includes but is not limited to any culture a young person identifies with, including local, national, and global contexts. 5 Task 1: Youth culture and its history For this task, think about the young people in your local region. You may write your answers or create a visual display to describe youth culture in Aotearoa New Zealand. You may use the template on the following two pages or be creative and create your own. Your written answers or visual display must: describe one group of young people in your local region. describe three characteristics of youth culture shared by the group. identify and describe three sub-cultures within this youth culture. Choose one of these subcultures and create a timeline to describe its history in Aotearoa New Zealand. Your timeline must include at least five key events. Other points to note: If you create your own visual display, you can present the poster, pamphlet, booklet, chart or table using any method you prefer, but it must be readable. You may also use visual aids such as photos, images and graphics. The assessor may ask you additional questions about your visual display. 1. 10 Task 2: Issues, risks and protection 1. Describe issues, risks and protective factors. Describe four youth issues that affect young people today in Aotearoa New Zealand. The youth issues you describe may include but are not limited to education, money, work, family/whānau, relationships, contribution to society, responsibility, mental health, sexual health, pressure and support. For each youth issue you choose: describe one risk factor that contributes to the issue. Risk factors may include poverty, stress, family commitments, abuse, lack of knowledge and skills, unhealthy support networks and so on. describe one protective factor that makes a young person more resilient.
