ASM offers forums and workshops to both public and healthcare professionals. The full day event splits into 2 distinct tracks; morning session public forum aims to encourage the public to take an active approach towards caring for their own health and well being, afternoon session will be dedicated towards medical and other healthcare professionals. Officiating the afternoon track is Guest-of-Honour, Associate Professor Benjamin Ong, Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health. Dr Ruth Kam, ASM Co-chair and Cardiology Specialist at Farrer Park Medical Centre (FPMC), holds great expectations for the event, We envision a future where general practitioners and the public are equally knowledgeable and Page 1 of 6

2 empowered to make informed decisions when it comes to healthcare management. This is yet another way Farrer Park hopes to bring value to our community. The morning public forum covers topics related to aging such as common eye diseases to avoiding bone fractures for the elderly. There are also workshops conducted by specialists where participants learn and personally experience the importance of screening. The afternoon forum aims to provide medical professionals with the latest information and techniques, especially on the changing trend of surgery. For example, minimally invasive surgery is becoming increasingly popular as expected quality of life is much higher for patients while outcome remains comparable to normal surgery. Topic speaker and specialist surgeon, Dr Kan Yuk Man will share more on the technology required, limitations and the applicability of this technique in the modern practice. Dr Ong Sea Hing, an experienced cardiologist will explain on the role of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) in treating degenerative aortic stenosis, the narrowing of the exit of the main pump (left ventricle) of the heart, a common cause of heart failure especially in the elderly. Developed in 2002, the minimally invasive technique provides a treatment option for high-risk patients unsuitable for open surgery and could even potentially be better than surgery in some patients. A quarter of patients aged 65 years and above will experience some form of aortic valve disease and cases are expected to double in the next decade. The workshop helmed by specialists aim to impart practical experiences to GPs, enabling them to provide specialised services on top of practice or even provide the appropriate recommendations for patients to seek a related specialist. Dr Khong Kok Sun, ASM Co-chair and Orthopaedic Specialist at FPMC said, Firstly, the benefits to imparting specialised skills to GPs enables them to serve the public Page 2 of 6

3 better which also helps reduce the cost to patients, as compared to having these performed by specialists. Secondly, our specialists will be able to spend more time engaging in higher level of specialised treatments, furthering their expertise in the relevant fields. The Inaugural Annual Scientific Meeting has attracted over 300 sign-ups and the committee hopes to continue building a culture of learning and sharing of knowledge amongst the medical fraternity.
