2 This popular annual course, offered by the, Brody School of Medicine, is designed to provide the most current, practical and concise information available on recent advances made in clinical medicine. The areas selected for discussion are derived from requests and suggestions made by past participants in response to a recent survey and from developing knowledge in a variety of medical specialties. Lectures and discussion periods will offer opportunities for both formal and informal exchanges between faculty and participants. A comprehensive course e-syllabus will provide useful information and references for future practice. Internists, family physicians, gynecologists, emergency medicine physicians, pharmacists and others providing primary care management of adult and adolescent medical problems should find the course will enhance their ability to apply practical, state-ofthe-art knowledge of differential diagnoses, management strategies and practice performance in the areas outlined below. Who Should Attend This conference has been planned for Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Pharmacists, particularly those in the fields of Primary Care, Family Medicine, Pulmonary, Women s Health and Oncology. All proceedings will be informal. Please plan to dress casually and bring a sweater or jacket for your comfort. Credit ACCREDITATION: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of The Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in association with the Eastern Area Health Education Center. The Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CREDIT: The Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University designates this live activity for a maximum of 17.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. To receive CE credit, attendance must be acknowledged at the registration desk upon arrival at the program. Participants must attend the entire session to receive CE credit. Statements of credit can be viewed and printed from CPE Monitor. The University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. 3 Course Content Upon completion of this knowledge-based program the participant should be able to integrate into practice new developments in the following areas: Skin Problems in Fishermen and Farmers Examine the various skin problems that are seen in these two outdoor occupations Discuss treatment options for many of these skin conditions Recognize and diagnose skin problems related to these occupations Interpretation of Challenging Thyroid Function Test Results: Discussion of a Series of Interesting Cases Review a process for interpretation of seemingly incongruent/difficult TFT results Identify potential medication effects on various thyroid function test results Discuss interesting cases highlighting difficult to interpret TFT results Discuss when to request endocrine consultation when dealing with difficult to interpret TFT results Almost Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Antibiotic Resistance Communicate an overview of the current state of antibiotic resistance Discuss driving forces of antibiotic resistance in the community and hospital settings Review clinical clues to the presence of antibiotic resistance- when to use the big guns Explore new tests to help reduce antibiotic use Alternative Therapy for Chronic Pain Management Evaluate non-opiate pharmacologic agents for use in chronic pain Introduce clinical health psychology as viable treatment options Examine effectiveness and indications for specialized interventions such as topical agents, physical medicine and mechanical interventions Hepatitis C: Role of Primary Care Discuss the epidemiology of hepatitis C: specifically regional Review recommendations for prevention, screening and diagnosis Identify when to refer and what to expect after referral Rehabilitation of the Stroke Patient Evaluate a patient post stroke to determine rehabilitation needs Develop a rehabilitation plan to optimize functional gains for a patient s post stroke Identify the appropriate rehabilitation setting to achieve the best possible functional outcome based on a patient s individual needs 2017 HTN Guidelines: Where Are We Now? 7 Course Location: the Crystal Coast Stroll the miles of beach or cast your best lure beyond the surf as the sun rises huge from the far horizon, the sea birds soar and cry overhead, and the Cape Lookout lighthouse flashes the last of its long night of friendly beacons. Follow the nature trails through the shady maritime forest of the Theodore Roosevelt State Park and visit our state of the art aquarium. Play a round of golf on a course bordered by gnarled yaupon trees and dancing sea grasses. Browse the unusual shops along the boardwalks in Morehead City or old restored Beaufort, where there is an intriguing museum, and where the docks are often crowded with boats from distant ports traveling the Intracoastal Waterway. Take your choice of excellent seafood restaurants or enjoy a romantic moonlight dinner cruise, then stop in at one or two of the area night spots. Its relaxing oceanfront views are indescribable and the chef s selections are superb!
