2 Program Description Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the state of North Carolina and the United States. Every day 438 Americans will die from lung cancer: one American death from lung cancer will occur every 3 minutes and 20 seconds, of every single day, of every single month, of the entire year. This conference aims to provide the most current advances and practical information on the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer. Designed to help you understand the options that are available for all patients, both surgical and nonsurgical, this conference will address dilemmas faced by thoracic oncologists for lung cancer treatment. This information will also help the primary care provider to become part of the treatment team for their patients with lung cancer. Lectures, discussion periods and a Molecular Lung Cancer Tumor Board will offer opportunities for both formal and informal exchanges between faculty and participants, and a comprehensive course e-syllabus will provide useful information and references for future practice. The keynote Jon Moran Lung Cancer Lectureship is named in honor of Dr. Jon Moran who was the iconic pioneer of lung cancer surgery at the Brody School of Medicine and in eastern North Carolina. ACCREDITATION: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of The Department of Internal Medicine and the Office of Continuing Medical Education of The Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Eastern Area Health Education Center. CREDIT: The Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only those credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CONTACT HOURS: Certificates reflecting 6.5 contact hours of education will be awarded at the completion of the program. PHARMACISTS This program, ACPE# L01-P will provide 6.5 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit for full-program participation. To receive CE credit, attendance must be acknowledged at the registration desk upon arrival at the program. Participants must attend the entire session to receive CE credit. Statements of credit can be viewed and printed from CPE Monitor. The University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

3 Course Content Upon completion of this knowledge-based program the participant should be able to integrate new developments in the following areas into practice: Racial Disparity in the Management of Lung Cancer Review the historical racial disparity data in the treatment of lung cancer. Identify an intervention strategy to reduce the racial disparity in the treatment of lung cancer. Discuss the results of a study that reduced the racial disparity in the treatment of lung cancer. Clinical Care Pathways in the Management of Lung Cancer Review the purpose and clinical importance of clinical care pathways in lung cancer. Outline the implementation of clinical care pathways within a regional health system. Discuss the impact of clinical care pathways in the outcome of lung cancer treatment. How I Treat: Malignant Pleural Effusions Review the diagnosis and clinical impact of malignant pleural effusion. Outline potential therapeutic approaches in the management of malignant pleural effusions. Discuss the thoracic surgical approach of managing malignant pleural effusions. New FDA Approved Drugs in the Treatment of Lung Cancer Review the new FDA approved drugs in the treatment of lung cancer over the past year. Discuss the mechanism of actions of these newly approved agents in the treatment of lung cancer. Outline the clinical use of newer targeted and immune therapies in lung cancer. A Debate: Smoking with Lung Cancer Treatment---Does it matter?... Yay or Nay? Review the data of how smoking impacts lung cancer treatment. Identify certain subsets of patients where smoking can be favorable with ongoing lung cancer treatment. Discuss the perspectives of a thoracic medical oncologist and a thoracic surgical oncologist and smoking with lung cancer treatment. How I Treat: Esophageal Cancer Review the epidemiology of esophageal cancers. Outline the needed multimodality workup and treatment for esophageal cancer. Discuss the foregut surgical specialist approach to treating esophageal cancers. Pulmonary Sarcomatoid and Large Cell Neuroendocrine Lung Carcinomas: Histology Tumors into Biology Reviews the morphologic basis of diagnosis pulmonary sarcomatoid and large cell neuroendocrine lung cancers. Outline the molecular basis of lung cancer beyond morphology. Discuss the molecular tumor biology of pulmonary sarcomatoid and large cell neuroendocrine lung cancers. Impact of Lung Cancer Screening at the Outer Banks Hospital Review the proven lung cancer death benefit of low-dose CT lung screening. Outline the implementation of a lung cancer screening at a community hospital. Discuss patient outcome and financial impact of lung cancer screening at the Outer Banks Hospital. Immune Therapy in Early Stage Lung Cancer Review the clinic benefit of immune therapy in advanced stage lung cancers. Discuss the studies of immune therapy in early stage lung cancer. Outline an approach of integrating immune therapy in early stage lung cancers. Molecular Tumor Board Analyze patient cases to emphasize the molecular tumor biology treatment approach in lung cancer. Participate in interactive discussion of integrating these approaches into individual patient care management and decision making.
