1 PD Exercise Newsletter Greater Parkinson's Disease Support Group FREE! Physical/Occupational Therapy Clinics for PD patients The Medical University of South Carolina is still looking for volunteers for their great free (how often do you see those two adjectives together!) clinic offering YOU a personalized evaluation and exercise program to help you cope with and fight back against PD! Please see the article on page 5 and the flyer on page 9 of this newsletter, then contact Dr. Eric Monsch at monsch@musc.edu to sign up. This opportunity ends soon and won t be available again until next year, so sign up today! Volume 1, Issue 6 June 2018 New this month MUSC PT/OT Evaluations and Exercise Programs What s Next? Moving Day what a day! Moving Day 2018 a poem by Lee Westbrock Move for Parkinson s at the Lowcountry Senior Center Editorial Policy Inside this issue: New this Month 1 Our goals are: 1) To make known to the Greater Parkinson s Disease community the exercise programs available which are conducted either specifically for us (and our care partners) or by individuals with experience in helping PD patients; 2) To provide links and stories related to exercise for PWP, including recent medical research; 3) To encourage all PD patients, regardless of disease severity, to improve their quality of life through exercise. This publication is not advertising and accepts no payments from those providers cited here. The contents are presented as a public service. If you are a provider and would like to be recognized, please contact Jay Phillips at jayphillips@homesc.com. For reasons of time and space, we will not publicize generalized exercise (e.g., seniors) classes. All spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, typos, misquotes, inaccuracies, misrepresentations and any other boo boos of any kind are entirely my fault and corrections will be made in future editions, if notified. Its Up To You. One of the key goals of this newsletter is to encourage greater participation in exercise programs by Parkinson s patients. Exercise is the ONLY KNOWN way you can actually slow the progression of your disease. We expect grant funds from Moving Day to be available this fall and hope that some of that funding will be used to support inexpensive exercise programs exclusive for Parkys, but for that to happen there are at least three requirements: 1) Properly qualified and trained instructor(s); 2) Facilities offering space to host classes; 3) Patients ready and willing to participate on a regular basis. Like the proverbial three-legged stool, if all three of these needs are not met, it s no go. If you are an exercise professional (PT,OT, Personal Trainer, etc.), please consider offering one of these programs that are recognized to help Parkinson s patients: 1) Delay the Disease at 2) PWR! Parkinson Wellness Recovery at 3) GEM Get Excited and Move! at If you know of a fitness facility that may consider offering a space for classes, please send us a line. (Note: Often, PD programs can take place mid-week, mid-day and so may be used to occupy dead time on a gym s schedule!) If you are a patient or care partner, we would welcome your comments about your preferred locations and times for classes. Grant opportunities will be coming soon! So please begin to think now about how you can help us exercise to make life better for the area s PD patients.
4 Greater PD Exercise Newslettter Page 4 MOVING DAY CHARLESTON -WOW! South Carolina s first Moving Day event on June 2 was a resounding success, thanks to the participation of PD patients, care partners, family members, friends, care providers and sponsors, We had about 650 folks turn out to visit our many displays and exercise program demonstrations, to share in the fellowship of our shared burden, and to Walk for a better future for People with Parkinson s. We raised over $150,000 for the Parkinson s foundation and for community grants to be announced later this year. To view the photos taken on this landmark day go to the Moving Day website at set=a &type=1&l=b fe Lee Westbrock, poet for the group, helped to kick off the Walk with his poem written in honor of the event. MOVING DAY 2018 by Lee Westbrock Run! Walk! Shuffle! Crawl! Somehow, we fine the wherewith all To bear the fearsome burden still; To go on fighting gainst it till We snatch a victory from the brawl. The fabled remedy we seek Perhaps, by us, will not be enjoyed, And yet, te treasure that we muster May well prove of greater luster When by future generations employed. Time has taken us along A road both rough and measured long A road hostile to our feet, A road that ends in our defeat But still, we ll pass the torch along
5 Greater PD Exercise Newslettter Page 5 MUSC Parkinson s Disease Physical/ Occupational Therapy Clinics FREE! The annual MUSC Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Evaluations and Exercise Programs are scheduled to take place in July. You may attend either Session 1 (July 10 and 17) or Session 2 (July 11 and 18). At the first session, you will spend time with a coterie of third-year PT/OT students, overseen by their professors, who will evaluate your personal physical capabilities, goals and challenges. A week later, you will return to receive a personalized binder of suggested exercises and other helpful information that will be most appropriate and useful for your needs. The student team will go over with you all of the recommended exercises, to be sure you understand how to properly execute each one. Your binder may typically include a list of physical problems or challenges that have been identified, the life quality goals you have prioritized (e.g., improve balance, be able to continue to travel), specific PT goals (e.g., stand on one leg for x seconds without support), and descriptions and pictures of the recommended exercises. There will also be supplemental information on such topics as local exercise classes or physical therapy research articles. I even received a detailed golf stretching routine! This program welcomes PD patients with ALL levels of disability, so if you know you need to be more active but don t know what exercises are best for YOU, this program is just what the doc ordered! You do not have to be an MUSC patient to take part and there is no charge for this program. Parking is also free! Please see the flyer on page 9 for clinic details and registration information. The clinic size is limited and only offered once each year, so don t wait one minute to sign up!! Remember: you can take pills till the cows come home, but no existing medications have been shown to delay or halt he progression of PD. Exercise, on the other hand, may retard the progress of the disease and can do wonders for such PD patient concerns as balance difficulty and muscle rigidity. It can also help prevent falls, one of the leading causes of major complications (broken bones; concussion) that may occur with Parkinson s Disease.
