The Burm Relief Centre (BRC) nurtures colitions mong civil society groups on Burm s borders to fcilitte common strtegies nd promote understnding nd trust mong diverse nd historiclly isolted communities. With Inter Pres finncil, politicl nd progrmmtic support, BRC promotes inititives tht bring together people of different ethnic bckgrounds nd people who work in different sectors. One such inititive is the Shwe Gs Movement (SGM), brod colition of individuls nd groups bsed in Burm, Thilnd, Bngldesh nd Indi, who re concerned bout the socil nd environmentl impct of proposed gs pipeline through Burm to Asin mrkets. Such pipeline would lso provide enormous revenues to Burm s corrupt nd repressive militry junt. In, SGM published Supply nd Commnd, mjor report tht brought significnt interntionl ttention to the thret on people s lives, livelihoods, helth nd environment posed by the pipeline. The colition lso worked with Indin ctivists to publicize nd question the Indin government s plns to purchse gs supplies from Burm. In Cnd, Inter Pres continued to prticipte in the Interntionl Civil Liberties Monitoring Group, colition of 38 Cndin orgniztions monitoring government policies nd prctices tht undermine civil liberties, humn rights, nd the rights of refugees nd migrnts in the context of the wr on terror. Co-founded by Inter Pres in 2002, the ICLMG ws n officil intervenor in the Commission of Inquiry in the cse of Mher Arr in. The Commission s report, relesed in the Fll of, included the ICLMG s recommendtions to exonerte Mr. Arr, to recommend further investigtion into the cses of other Cndin citizens detined nd tortured in Syri, nd to estblish civilin oversight of ll Cndin gencies involved in ntionl security opertions. lerning nd knowledge for ction The struggle to erdicte entrenched inequlities nd injustice in Cnd nd round the world requires constnt innovtion nd fresh ides. In September, Inter Pres brought together 22 people from Cnd nd round the world to exmine the globl trend in stte policies tht control nd contin the movement of vulnerble people. Recognizing the contribution migrtion mkes to who we re nd who we will become in the North nd globl South prticipnts considered strtegies to counterct nd trnsform the pervsive of fer tht runs through the migrtion debte. In Peru in August, Inter Pres counterprt Project Counselling Service orgnized n interntionl legl seminr on the use of sexul violence s wepon of wr. The seminr brought together women s groups from Peru, Guteml nd Colombi, interntionl legl experts, nd members of the Peruvin judicil system, to develop legl tools for prosecuting cses of wr-relted sexul violence in ntionl nd interntionl courts. Prticipnts emphsized the importnce of providing pproprite psychologicl support to women giving testimony, to ensure tht the legl process does not re-victimize them. All involved greed tht women survivors themselves need to be t the centre of their own cses, s engged ctors, with ccompniment from lwyers nd psychologists. Given ongoing politicl turmoil in these countries, prticipnts greed to work together to ssure the sfety nd security of women witnesses, s well s lwyers nd judges. In, Tiniguen, leding environmentl orgniztion in Guine-Bissu, orgnized its third nnul youth forum on the Bijgos islnds, which brought together hundreds of young women nd men to develop plns to conserve the delicte biodiversity of the re. Prticipnts worked together to incorporte new conservtion ides while keeping live the culturl prctices tht re in blnce with the rchipelgo ecosystem. Following the forum, locl youth orgnized n exhibition showcsing current Bijgos hndicrfts nd rt, reminders of deeply rooted nd ever vibrnt culture. mobilizing resources Generting resources to support socil justice ction is n integrl prt of Inter Pres work. In 1999, in response to lrming reports of humn rights buses nd environmentl dmge cused by Cndin mining compnies, Inter Pres joined humn rights, boriginl, nd environmentl orgniztions in pooling resources to crete the orgniztion MiningWtch Cnd (MWC). Inter Pres lso fcilitted the prticiption of member of the Ntionl Frmers Union in n interntionl trining course on biosfety nd genetic engineering. Thousnds of Cndins joined citizens worldwide to demnd tht our government support the United Ntions mortorium on Termintor technology.
