Someone you know has nowhere else to turn. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte Annual Report Fiscal Year 2010
Trust. Honesty. Kindness. Compassion. These are values we exemplify at Planned Parenthood Mar Monte year after year. And, despite the constant threat of government funding cuts, fiscal year 2010 was no exception. In this intractable recession, our health centers continued to welcome women and men who had lost jobs and insurance coverage. We maintained vital programs that educate and inspire because we know they are essential to building healthy families and communities. We advocated for reproductive freedom at state and national levels. We celebrated the bittersweet victory of national health care reform, which brings relief to millions of uninsured women and families but also establishes formidable obstacles to coverage for abortion-related care. Our work to ensure continued reproductive freedom for all remained constant, as did our focus on high-quality health care and comprehensive sexuality education. You can count on us to educate, advocate and provide a safe place for health care in these turbulent times. It wasn t easy, but our efforts were crucial to our clients and our communities. Because someone you know needs us right now. Today.
Someone you know has a new job but it doesn t come with health insurance.
PPMM Medical Services 2010 PPMM was there to meet the demand for essential health care services when our patients and their families needed us most. Because we put our patients first, the women and men we serve reported high levels of satisfaction with PPMM care and treatment. Our patients found it easier to make appointments, and we were able to serve them more quickly with our centralized Response Center. Medical care was delivered even more efficiently with the expansion of our electronic health records (EHR) system, now in place at more than a third of our 33 health centers. Our new Family First health center in Fresno is twice the size of the former center and serves the largest volume of patients in the affiliate. We led a regional campaign in the Pajaro Valley to increase awareness of environmental toxins that are harmful to reproductive health. Patients at 80 percent of PPMM health centers may now receive colposcopy, a test performed after an abnormal PAP smear, improving our continuity of care and service. Women have enhanced access to care at our health centers that offer pre-natal check-ups and long-acting birth-control devices, with more clinicians trained to provide these services. Someone you know depends on us for top-quality health care. MEDICAL VISTS 434,324 Family planning 27,783 Pregnancy tests and counseling 25,717 Primary care, adults 11,299 Pediatric care 8,943 Pre-natal care 16,756 Abortions 246 Sterilizations 27,527 Other services 552,595 Total medical visits
Someone you know is almost certain you can t get pregnant the first time.
PPMM Education & Outreach 2010 Teens, especially, need to receive accurate information so they can make sound decisions about their reproductive health and know when to seek care. In fiscal year 2010, PPMM preserved our vital education programs despite funding cuts. Teens and young adults in California schools and organizations throughout our affiliate received comprehensive information about reproductive health and sexually transmitted disease-prevention to combat unintended pregnancy and the rise of STDs in the communities we serve. Young mothers in 21 Teen Success groups benefited from this unique PPMM program that helps teen moms stay in school and maintain their family size until they graduate. Thirty Teen Success mothers received Morgan Scholarships to pursue post-secondary education. Also, 15 new Teen Success groups were launched at nine other affiliates around the country. EDUCATION CONTACTS 14,628 High school education 9,538 Middle school education 1,652 Elementary school education 2,149 Male services 4,165 HIV/AIDS education and outreach 46 Peer educators 359 Participants in Teen Success support groups for pregnant and parenting teens Our Teen Talk groups for middle school girls and the Male Involvement/ Investment Programs for young men continued to reach exceptionally highrisk youth. These pre-teens and adolescents learned how to protect their health and set goals to build a promising future. 68 Participants in Teen Talk, an intensive weekly program for girls ages years old who are at very high risk for unplanned pregnancy Parents and other adults who work with youth were coached by our Education staff to communicate effectively with pre-teens and adolescents about reproductive health and sexuality. 1,073 Adolescent Family Life Program/Cal-Learn comprehensive case management for teen parents years of age Someone you know needs honest information. 527 Parents and adults trained to better communicate with youth 34,479 Other education and outreach 43,833 Facts of Life Line callers
Someone you know must have the freedom to choose the care she needs.
PPMM Advocacy 2010 PPMM continues to be an active, articulate and visible advocate for policies that preserve access to services. PPMM joined with other allies to support health care reform without additional restrictions on abortion, and we helped defeat an amendment that would have excluded abortion services from insurance plans across the nation. We conducted dozens of phone banks and made over 5,000 calls to members of Congress, calling for health care reform. We successfully led the charge, during the health care reform process, to give states the option of expanding family planning services. We fought to ensure that, for the first time ever, women ages will be guaranteed preventive health coverage. We collaborated with the ACLU to legally challenge Personhood USA s Nevada ballot initiative which would outlaw all abortions and many methods of birth control. PPMM engaged and informed an extensive network of activists by using online resources, such as social media and bloggers. We urged elected representatives and staff of key government agencies to protect health care funding for low-income women and families in California. Someone you know depends on us to protect all her options. ADVOCACY ACTIONS 6,869 Activist volunteer hours 108,976 Pro-choice supporters in database 21,418 PPMM activists 319,174 s sent to activists 9,203 Actions taken by individuals to either engage the public or influence public policy 2,934 Phone calls made to enlist supporters in Nevada 4,003 Letters and postcards to officials in California 77 Advocacy events such as phone banks and health care reform rallies 359 California Capitol Day attendees
