2 West Jeff Doctor Reaches Out After Newtown Shooting As the 34th Queen of the Krewe of Centurions, I am honored and privileged to have such a special role in Mardi Gras this year. I first came to New Orleans in 2003 to complete a pediatric residency at Tulane University and have been absorbed into this wonderful city ever since. Since completing my residency, I went on to Emory University for my neonatology fellowship and have since returned to New Orleans to give back to this same community which has taught me so much. While working at hospitals throughout the Southeast, locally I am on staff at West Jefferson Medical Center and Children s Hospital. As a native of Connecticut the recent tragedy of the Newtown shootings has hit particularly close to home. My father works in Newtown, CT, three immediate family members are public school teachers in Fairfield County, CT and one of the slain teachers, Victoria Soto, is from my hometown of Stratford, CT. I felt it was important for my reign to incorporate an element of philanthropy which will leave an impact well beyond Mardi Gras Day The Captain and officers of the Krewe of Centurions have supported my efforts in raising money for the Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund which has been established at my alma mater, the University of Connecticut, for victims families. New riding members had $100 of their membership fees donated to the fund this year. Also, by texting uconn newtown new orleans loves newtown to a $10 donation will be made. 3 Heart Month Art Encourages Healthy Living for Our Hearts West Jefferson Medical Center (WJMC) Cardiovascular Services is pleased to announce the winners of the Children s Art Project. The winners are: Brianne, Kaitlyn, Kristen, Angelina and Lyle. The overall winner is Alisha. According to Christy Kareokowsky, RN and WJMC Cardiac Service Line Director, dozens of fourth grade students demonstrated creativity, imagination and talent to answer the question What does being heart healthy mean to you? Selecting finalists was a difficult task, Mrs. Kareokowsky said. We believe this selection of heart art will bring smiles to our patients, their families and the community. Winning art will be featured on an electronic billboard at the Crescent City Connection in February. It will also appear on greeting cards available in the WJMC Gift Shop and Budget Saver Grocery (Lapalco Blvd. and Barataria), while supplies last in February. Funds from the student art card project will be used towards the purchase of scales for patients with congestive heart failure. 5 Heart Disease in Women Although many people think of heart disease as a man s problem, women can and do get heart disease. In fact, heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, according to the American Heart Association. It is also a leading cause of disability among women. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart itself. This is called coronary artery disease and happens slowly over time. It s the major reason people have heart attacks. Prevention is important: two-thirds of women who have a heart attack fail to make a full recovery. The older a woman gets, the more likely she is to get heart disease. But women of all ages should be concerned about heart disease. All women can take steps to prevent it by practicing healthy lifestyle habits. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to reduce your chances of getting heart disease.
