1 Workshop information Wonderful workshop, it s one that always attracts interesting speakers. I strongly recommend it to every HIV/AIDS clinician & researcher in Africa. This is the African CROI. 1

2 Speakers feedback The INTEREST workshop was one of the best run meetings I have ever attended. Having a chance to share our work in San Francisco with a packed and attentive audience of engaged clinicians an d investigators in Africa made the trip worthwhile, and I would certainly do it again. I also enjoyed the less formal hallway discussions with attendees as such interactions rarely occur at the larger international meetings. I have encouraged my US-based colleagues to attend future meetings if possible. Steven Deeks University of California, San Francisco The INTEREST meetings, since they started in Kampala, have given young researchers and their mentors the much needed opportunities to present their work and also meet other researchers from other countries. This kind of interactions has resulted into new collaborations as new talents of young researchers are discovered. Elly Katabira Makarere University College of Health Sciences in Kampala, Uganda Th e 7 th INTEREST Workshop in Dakar, Senegal, May 2013, provided a forum for the high-level exchange of scientific advances that will improve the prevention of HIV infection and the care of people living with HIV in Africa. Timothy Mastro FHI 360, USA The INTEREST workshop is an unique platform for African clinicians and scientists to show case their work and share both the challenges they face and the solutions they develop. It is a critical element of strengthening the African scientific community and forging new collaborations to advance the African medical research agenda. This meeting affords young investigators opportunity to share the stage with experience senior investigators in a setting which comfortably facilitates an active and open interaction. Sponsors are contributing to the development and enhancement of scientific rigor in a setting of desperate need. Personally, as an invited speaker, I have benefitted greatly and learned a great deal about the evolving research landscape of the African community through my participation. I hope to have the privilege of participating in this dynamic and enriching meeting in future. 3 Introduction 8 th INTEREST Workshop The INTEREST Workshop initiative was launched in 2007 and spearheaded by Professors Joep M.A. Lange (Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD), Academic Medical Center, department of Global Health/University of Amsterdam) and Charles A.B. Boucher (Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, University of Rotterdam). Together with a prominent group of international experts in the fi eld of HIV/AIDS, a focused annual international meeting in Africa has been developed. During these meetings, experts in the fi eld of HIV prevention and treatment share their knowledge and views on a variety of HIV-related topics. The workshop focuses on issues of particular relevance for the African continent and gives the opportunity for young researchers to present their data. The workshop size and atmosphere facilitates discussion and interaction between the participants. Seven successful meetings have been convened since INTEREST s inception, the fi rst being held in Uganda, followed by Senegal, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, and, again in 2013, Senegal. The 8 th INTEREST Workshop will take place in Lusaka, Zambia, from May 5 -May 9 (mid-day), The format of the meeting is a two and a half day program consisting of plenary sessions on HIV prevention and treatment with presentations by renowned invited speakers, abstract-driven presentations, round table discussions and poster sessions. Additional time will be allocated to questions & answers and discussion in order to foster an intimate interactive workshop. This year s workshop will start with a pre-workshop with two parallel workshops from till hrs on May 5. The workshops, including meet-the-experts will be organized for people with a special interest in: 1 Pediatrics and PMTCT (Option B+) 2 Implementation science Participants can register separately for the pre-workshop and the 8 th INTEREST Workshop. For participants from Zambia and Zimbabwe there will be a special, reduced, registration fee. Unlike previous years, the fi rst session of the Workshop on HIV drug resistance (AIGHD/PASER) will start on Tuesday May 6 in the morning, followed by two premium satellite symposia, organized by respectively AbbVie, and Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. We are happy to announce our partnership with the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society and RESAPSI (Réseau Africain des praticiens assurant la prise en charge médicale des personnes vivant avec le VIH). We hope you will join us in this important educational opportunity. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Joep Lange, MD, PhD AMC, University of Amsterdam / Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) Charles Boucher, MD, PhD Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands 3

4 Participants feedback Scientific Committee The workshop is well organized, the presentations are so nicely prepared and are highly updating in terms of recent discoveries and evidence based scientifi c fi ndings on HIV epidemics and treatments worldwide and sub Saharan Africa. This is the African CROI. I do suggest that the INTEREST Workshop should be an ongoing process and this program should include the participants from outside the African continent. Very good presentations that are relevant to my routine work. Wonderful workshop, it s one that always attracts interesting speakers. I strongly recommend it to every HIV/AIDS clinician & researcher in Africa. A State-of-the-ART Workshop. The key note lectures are worth to be presented to the participants in print/copy because these are remarkable points that should be passed on. Hope to participate again in future. Impressive quality of presentations from the younger African clinicians and scientists. 8 It has been called the African CROI. It makes my calendar before CROI (but don t tell anyone!). Organizers Attending the INTEREST workshop is memorable from several points of view. International and African plenary speakers present the latest state of the art HIV science while up and coming African new investigators have an opportunity to present their findings to a highly informed audience. All of this takes place in the plenary setting with ample time provided for engaged interchanges between audience members and presenters of all levels. Exchanges around posters presented in the health break/tea/coffee area are animated, providing an opportunity that is less daunting for some INTEREST workshop participants than the plenary hall to make contact with individual presenters and share their experiences in similar domains. The skills of scientific presentation, responding to queries and challenges, and translation of scientific knowledge across disciplines are all modelled by senior participants who encourage young researchers to participate actively. Young enthusiastic scientists get new ideas for directions they could take their research in and, often for the first time, feel part of a community of African researchers. Serious consideration should be given to webcasting or, at a minimum, video recording the conference for ease of sharing emerging science across Africa. As well, it could play an important role in facilitating cross-continent linkages between research teams and individual researchers.
