2 Message from the of the Malaysian Society of Allergy and Immunology (MSAI) Welcome to the MSAI Annual Congress The increasing prevalence of allergic diseases continues and is no different in Malaysia. Efforts need to be made to establish the latest prevalence as we head towards being a developed nation in less than a decade in This needs to be in place to ensure optimal strategies are in place to combat allergic diseases, and not ignoring another emerging disease that is Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases (PID). Globalisation has set the trend towards networking especially via digital means and more conventional congregational methods such as the MSAI Annual Congress which is now into its 16 th edition. Realising the need to maintain and seek updates in this specialized field of allergy and clinical immunology means we link ourselves with other nations in the region. It is a great pleasure to continue the association and collaboration with our sister society, ACIS - Allergy and Clinical Immunology Society (Singapore) with the 2 nd MSAI-ACIS Joint Scientific Meeting Both societies have lined up an interesting programme that is both relevant in our daily clinical practice as well as highlighting current disease mechanisms, diagnostics and therapies. We hope you will join us in attending this scientific meeting and embrace ourselves in the problems that currently exist in an ever increasing complexity of allergic and immunological diseases. With the rising prevalence and awareness of allergic/immunologic disorders in the Asia-Pacific region, it becomes increasingly important that primary care physicians, organ-based specialists and internists/paediatricians are able to diagnose these conditions early and initiate treatment where appropriate. Early referral should be made to the allergist/immunologists for further evaluation and sub-specialist management where needed e.g. provocation tests, allergen specific immunotherapy, desensitization, and administration of intravenous immunoglobulins. Consequently, governments, health services and the pharmaceutical industry will need to expand access to expensive treatments for relatively rare conditions like hereditary angioedema and primary immunodeficiency diseases. Even life-saving epinephrine auto-injectors remain poorly accessible and expensive in rural areas and primary care. We hope that continuing education, networking and collaborations through joint conferences like this will help provide a multi-disciplinary platform for everyone to keep updated with the state-of-the-art in management of allergic/immunologic disorders pertinent to Singapore and Malaysia. It should also become the annual meeting through which we interest and educate our junior doctors in this specialty. Eventually we should aim to establish an accredited national training program in adult and paediatric allergy/immunology in Singapore and Malaysia.
