1 Mayo Clinic Department of Orthopedic Surgery Graz University Department of Orthopedic Surgery Presents 2nd International Symposium on PELVIC RECONSTRUCTION May 8-10, 2003 Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota Course Directors Dr. Franklin Sim Dr. David Lewallen Dr. Robert Trousdale Dr. Reinhart Windhager

2 General Information COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will include teaching and anatomical demonstrations in three challenging areas of pelvic surgery. Reconstruction of the pelvis and acetabulum presents a complex and challenging area. With the proliferation of revision total hip arthroplasty, management of bone deficiency in the acetabulum is an increasing problem. In recent years there have been improved methods to deal with this difficult situation, depending on the type and extent of bone loss. Another challenging area for the orthopedic surgeon is DDH. As a consequence of improved and earlier diagnosis, patients present to surgeons with borderline dysplastic hip joints with or without osteoarthritic changes in which it is often difficult to determine the proper surgical procedure. Recent developments include innovative pelvic osteotomies to deal with these conditions. However, their infrequent nature does not provide adequate training and education in this area. The third topic to be covered in this symposium will be tumors in the pelvic region which are challenging both from an oncological as well as reconstructive point of view which comprise the most severe problems in reconstructive pelvic surgery. A highlight of the symposium will be a hands-on anatomy workshop. This will give participants the opportunity to work with leading experts in the field during the hands-on workshop on cadaver specimens. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES Evaluate anatomy and mechanics of the pelvis and hip Assess dysplastic conditions of the pelvis and hip Choose treatment rationale and surgical options Demonstrate surgical techniques of various pelvic osteotomies in the laboratory Recognize the advantages and disadvantages of different surgical approaches to the hip Assess the failed total hip and the different options for revision acetabular surgery Manage major acetabular bone defects in revision surgery Demonstrate various revision surgical techniques in the laboratory Appraise evaluation and pathology of tumors of the pelvis Assess various procedures for pelvic reconstruction of the tumor resection Demonstrate resection techniques for pelvic tumors in various regions (I, II, III, IV in laboratory) Attendance at this Mayo course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be discussed or taught in this course. INTENDED AUDIENCE This course is designed for orthopedic surgeons with particular interest in pelvic reconstruction.
