2 GENERAL INFO All Educational Sessions will be held at the Maier Centre for at Ave. All are welcome (families, teachers, professionals, community members ) All workshops are $25 per person for Maier Centre Members and $50 per person for nonmembers (unless otherwise indicated). Payment can be made by contacting the office at (780) or by filling out the registration form attached. You can also register online at Receipts are available upon request. For information on respite provided during the Educational Sessions please contact the Respite Coordinator at SAVE THE DATE! 7 th Annual Children s of Edmonton Conference Jan 23 rd & 24 th, 2014 Keynote Speakers: Carl Honore & Michelle Garcia Winner
3 Regulation at home and in the Classroom Sue Mitchell, OT September 23 th 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm This presentation will help parents, teachers, and other caregivers or workers to better understand their child s sensory needs and challenges. Maintaining regulation will be discussed as well as information about self-regulation, sensory diets and environmental adaptations and modifications. A variety of practical strategies will be shared that can be used to help the child stay calm and participate in everyday activities. Expanding Language Skills in Verbal Children with ASD Kathleen Kennedy, SLP October 3 rd 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm In this session you will learn strategies for increasing the language skills of children who are talking using echolalia, single words or sentences. We will discuss how to facilitate development of their vocabulary, comprehension and sentence structure skills as well as how to increase their social and functional use of language. Independence in the Classroom: Coat, Boots, Mitts and More! Sue Mitchell, OT October 9 th 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Many children struggle with independence in classroom and school routines, whether it is getting ready for recess, managing their belongings, or learning specific skills such as toileting or handwashing. Information will be presented to address common concerns. As well, time will be available to ask specific questions and problem-solve trouble spots. Supporting Early Social Interaction with Peers Monica Eggink, SLP October 16 th 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Considering the perspective of others is a core challenge for individuals with autism. Come learn and practice concrete strategies to help your child tune in and consider the perspective others. Learn how to set up a playdate and help kids have more positive social interactions with others. This session will address social interactions with children who are able to communicate with sentences.
4 Behaviour Symptoms Associated with GI Discomfort Dr. Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation Chair in Autism Co-Director Autism Research Centre, Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Associate Professor, University of Alberta October 23 rd 6:00pm - 8:00 pm Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are among the most common medical conditions associated with autism. A lack of communication skills may make it difficult for people with autism to communicate their discomfort and may exhibit behaviors that are related to the GI issues. When the pain or discomfort ends as a result of appropriate treatment, it's likely that those behaviors will lessen or cease. Meeting Your Child s Nutritional Needs Susan Jardine, Registered Dietician October 24 th 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Meeting the nutritional needs of any child can be tricky; however, this can be especially challenging with a child who has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This presentation will provide information on nutritional needs of children and ways to ensure that your child is getting what they need to stay healthy. It will also touch on the use/efficacy of alternative diets and supplements Building Your Sensory Toolbox Leanne Wong, OT & Melanie Lam, OT November 5 th 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Further to the workshop Regulation at Home and in the Classroom this workshop will dive further into the tools that can be used to help children stay calm and regulated. Participants will have the opportunity to look at different regulation tools available and make a plan for regulation tools that might benefit their child. Feeding Challenges: Expanding Your Child s Food Repertoire Sue Mitchell, OT & Melanie Lam, OT November 19 th 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Meal times can be very frustrating to parents when your child has a limited food repertoire. Learn more about the nature of these challenges and discover ideas and strategies to expand the variety of foods that your child will eat and increase your child s mealtime participation.
5 Using Visual Supports for Communication Vanja Kostic SLP December 11 th 1:00pm - 3:00pm Visuals strategies are an essential tool that can be used across skill levels, ranging from early childhood to adults. Visual supports can be used with a person who is non verbal and a person who is verbal. Using visual strategies can support understanding communication of others, support transitions to reduce problem behaviours, increase functional communication, and so much more!! This workshop with explain how visual supports can be implemented and expanded at home and in the community to provide a valuable framework to support communication and active engagement throughout the day.
