Zeman, Ph.D., Research Associate Professor of Radiation University of North Carolina School of Medicine The purpose of this course is to increase your knowledge of the principles of molecular, cancer and radiation biology underlying the practice of radiation oncology. The syllabus will follow the content outline established by the American Board of Radiology for the following topic areas: basic cancer biology and the molecular biology of cancer the response to radiation at the molecular and cellular levels the radiation responses of normal and malignant tissues hereditary effects and radiation carcinogenesis radiation safety and protection standards The class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:30 PM, from late August, 2016 through mid-march, 2017 (see syllabus for exact dates). Classes will last from 60 to 90 minutes, and will be held jointly at Duke, UNC, NC State and Wake Forest, via teleconference and/or WebEx. This is preferred if possible, as it encourages participation and discussion, and is usually less distracting. OR, students can connect through WebEx individually, which affords flexibility to access the lecture from any device or location, and is suitable for those who do not have reliable access to a teleconferencing system or are otherwise unable to attend the group session. Please note that at present, we do not have an easy way of recording the lectures for distribution and viewing after the fact. For those using WebEx, the web address and access code for the online portion of the lecture will be contained in an invitation; participants should be on the lookout for this in the days leading up to the start of the course. Please keep this for use in accessing subsequent lectures. Note that the high sensitivity of the microphones used for teleconferencing is such that even small noises (eating, drinking, shuffling papers, etc.) can be extremely disruptive for both the lecturer and the attendees. Therefore, PLEASE mute all your microphones except when asking questions. 2

These lecture materials are considered the intellectual property of the course instructors and should not be shared with ANYONE outside of class, nor should the download links be provided to non-course attendees. Student performance in the course will be assessed by Dr. Kirsch (Duke attendees) and Dr. Zeman (UNC, NC State and Wake Forest attendees).
