1 January March 2016 Volume 1, Issue 3 Cancer Prevention El Paso - CPEP Did you know? ACCION promotoras have recruited eligible participants from over 150 sites in El Paso County TIEMPO has been successful at recruiting year old at non-traditional recruitment sites such as vocational schools BEST has completed 1,043 mammograms De Casa has completed 1,006 pap smears Research Associates Adam Alomari, MPH Maria Chaparro, MPH Silvia Flores, MD, PhD Monica Reyes, PhD, MPH Rebekah Salaiz, MS ACCION, BEST, DE CASA & TIME TO VACCINATE Saludos from the CPEP Team! All the CPRIT funded programs have been busy with their ongoing activities to educate our community about preventing cancer and enrolling eligible participants for free breast, cervical, HPV and colorectal cancer screening. The CPEP Team had the chance to update and touch base with its Community Advisory Board (CAB) at the beginning of the year. The meeting format included updates on the progress of each program, and a new interactive feedback session entitled Café CPRIT Style. This facilitated dialogue activity allowed CAB partners to give timely and specific feedback about recruitment and ways to improve outreach. Members of our CAB commented how they enjoyed the time to engage with the different programs, but also the networking time the meeting provided. Next steps include the incorporation of CAB feedback into current work plans and the planning of another interactive meeting format for the next meeting. We would love to hear from you about your ideas for the next CAB meeting! Promotoras Recruitment Numbers Throughout the existence of all programs [ACCION 1 & 2, De Casa en Casa, BEST & Time to Vaccinate!], promotoras have managed to enroll a total of 14,805 participants from El Paso County since Below is a detailed description of each program s recruitment numbers: ACCION 1 [March 2012 February 2015] : 9339 ACCION 2 [March 2015 March 2015] : 2888 De Casa en Casa [June 2014 current] : 1053 BEST [August 2014 current] : 929 Time to Get Vaccinated! 2 CPEP Page 2 of 6 National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month The ACCION Team worked hard during the month of March promoting screening as part of awareness efforts during National Colorectal Cancer Awarenesss Month. Over 400 people received CRC education through collaborative efforts with members of our CAB. Two ACCION participants, (including a cancer survivor) gave testimonials about their experience in the program to encourage people to get screened. ACCION Promotoras joined awareness efforts with the NMSU Fred Hutchinson Cancer Reserch Center Team and its giant, inflatable colon at local health fairs and the Hugo V. Mendoza Solder Family Care Center on Fort Bliss. Thanks to new collaborador, Angela Schoppet from William Beaumont Army Medical Center, two ACCION promotoras supported outreach to soldiers and their families. Next steps for the ACCION promotoras include following up with participants that were eligible to receive free screening services and continuing to seek out new community partners. We look forward to working with our partners next year to raise awareness about the importance of getting screened for colorectal cancer. The ACCION Team would like to thank the following people that made this year s CRC awareness events successful: Reynalda Valdez & Juan Muñoz, ACCION Program Manny Sanchez, Guillen Middle School Robert Maldonado & Perla Chaparro, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Norma Montes, San Jacinto Adult Learning Center Karoline Sondergeroth, NMSU Angela Schoppet, William Beaumont Army Medical Center Elizabeth Moya, Ysleta Community Learning Center CRC event at Ft. 3 Page 3 of 6 CPEP De Casa en Casa Since the distribution of our initial newsletter, the De Casa en Casa program has seen a consistency in both recruiting and screening numbers. Year 2 witnessed high figures and concluded with numbers exceeding our target goal. The year saw a total of 854 women recruited of which 790 were screening eligible. A total of 614 women completed a pap within Year 2 of the program, giving us an 87% screening rate for the year; an increase from Year 1 (83%). More importantly, the program has finally expanded its services to Hudspeth County as previously planned and has actively begun recruiting. When detected at an early stage, the five-year survival rate for women with invasive cervical cancer is 91%. In total, De Casa En Casa has collected and completed the following: 1,550 Total recruitment/program implementation 1,401 Eligible for pap screening; of which 1,006 completed pap screening 116 Eligible for BCCS; of which 26 completed pap screening 62 Eligible for navigation 14 Eligible for education Since the program s implementation in June of 2014, findings have yielded: 48 Pap positive results 14 CIN1 results 2 Cancers BEST (Breast Education, Screening & NavigaTion) Year 2 of the BEST program clearly proved that its need throughout the community is at an all-time high. Similar to the De Casa program, BEST witnessed great figures, with totals for Year 2 also exceeding expectations. Recruitment saw a total of 813 women, with 747 eligible for screening. With scheduled follow-up screenings starting to be seen in Year 2, a total of 751 women received a mammogram, giving the program a 92% completion rate; up from Year 1 (81%). As of March 2016, BEST has collected and completed the following: 300 Comparison Surveys Recruitment[2] 237 Four Month Follow-Up Comparison Surveys[2] 1,359 Total Recruitment/Program Implementation 1,250 Eligible for mammogram screening; of which 1,043 completed screening Over 2.9 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today.
