2 Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) ~ Workshop o Working meeting on Social Determinants will be in El Paso, Feb 2-3, 2009 o Hannah Heffner will be attending o Will be strategizing how to integrate social determinants into public health programs and policy in border communities both in U.S. and Mexico No More Deaths report on custody standards (Hannah Heffner) o There are no regulations for treatment of immigrants caught in the desert o Over 350 cases of Border Patrol agents abusing or neglecting migrants in report released by No More Deaths o Top issues include lack of sufficient water, food, and medical care, and physical and verbal abuse o Report, entitled Crossing the Line is available online at: ( o Anyone interested please contact Hannah Grant submissions (Evelyn Whitmer) o Working with hospital in Cochise County Health Department o Using the SCC Family Advocacy Projects as a model for a grant we will be putting in shortly o Will include Farmers Market and WIC Ila Tittlebaugh has a new job in Pima County and may not be able to represent NCC PRC Director s Meeting (Lisa Staten) o This year we will not be presenting at this meeting but it is a good conference that is aimed at practitioners so we will focus on this for next year. o We will probably know by then if we have been funded o As a rep for NCC Susan volunteered the PRC to be on a panel. She and Lisa will be presenting on our collaborative process. o NCC is more organized and more balanced than in the past o NCC representatives & PRC directors attend this meeting o Very helpful for us that we have Susan K. promoting our group National Wear Red Day for Women on February 6, 2009 Hannah Hefter hehafter@ .arizona.edu 2
