2 WELCOME Over the last decades remarkable progress has been made in the field of solid organ transplantation. While short-term survival rates have seen a dramatic rise, the long-term results have been hampered by side effects of chronic immunosuppression. Apart from metabolic derangements and nephrotoxicity, the development of de novo malignancies in transplant recipients plays an increasing role in our practice. Preexisting malignant disease in the organ donor or recipient further adds to clinical dilemmas. This symposium seeks to explore the interrelationship of transplantation and cancer. A wide range of topics is covered by distinguished international speakers in sessions chaired by renowned national experts. This was made possible by the generous financial support from Wyeth AHP, which is gratefully acknowledged. The program is meant to appeal to academic and nonacademic health professionals, who increasingly care for recipients of organ grafts.
