1 vol. 1 no. 2 smmer 2015 what a year! Greetings fellow CPNP members, Jne 12 th marked the year anniversary of CPNP s inception and what a year it has been! As always, if yo have any qestions, sggestions, frther feedback or want to get involved, don t hesitate to contact or Exective Board at (cpnp.naspghan@gmail.com). 2 vol. 1 no. 2 smmer 2015 Smart Phone Apps for Pediatric GI Registered Dietitians By Abigail Lndin, MS, RD, CSP Whether it s plotting on a growth chart, reading labels for allergens, or tracking yor steps, there s an app for it! There are thosands of smart phone apps that can make life a little easier for both RDs and patients. Here are a few of the best free apps that are most applicable to the Pediatric GI and Ntrition setting. JOURNALING AND TRACKING APPS MyFitnessPal is one of the most poplar apps for recording food intake and fitness. This app can easily sync with other apps and devices that monitor physical activity to compare food intake to calories brned! The ser can set goals, follow trends, scan barcodes, calclate the ntrition in homemade recipes, and commnicate with a social network, too. MyFitnessPal is most appropriate for teens or adlts. Similar apps are Foodcate and LoseIt. Similac StrongMoms allows sers to follow feeding, sleeping, diapers, and growth pattern trends over time. This app incldes options for both formla feeding and breastfeeding babies. As an added perk, moms and dads are provided other sefl advice and tips for feeding and parenting. The Neocate app allows parents to record food items introdced and any possible allergic reactions by baby. Bowel Mover allows the ser to jornal bowel movements, water intake, dietary changes and trends over time. One bit of information to keep in mind, the dietary component is mainly focsed on glten. This app is great for patients who provide a vage stooling history or are trying to identify patterns. Tmmy Tracker gives the ser the capability to track food intake, medication, physical activity, GI symptoms, and weight. This app also has a bilt-in database of healthy recipes and can generate a shopping list based on recommended recipes and yor own recipes. Tmmy Tracker does only allow tracking for a few days before reqiring an pgrade to the paid version of the app. EoE Tracker helps patients record which of the six most common food allergens they have eliminated in their diet and describe any symptoms on either a six or twelve-week elimination plan. This app provides a checklist of food items that shold be inclded and those that shold be avoided within each of the six common food allergens in addition to general information abot EoE. Unfortnately, EOE Tracker does not inclde a food diary for patients to actally log their food intake. APPS FOR KIDS Bean Sprots is an app that featres games sch as the Veg Head in which kids can decorate a smiley face design with healthy foods. This app also has fn and interactive videos that featre the Imaginibbles making recipes like Crocamole and food related conversations that focs on topics sch as, What wold an alien pack in his lnch? The ScienceHero app takes kids on an easy to nderstand and physiologically accrate animated trip throgh the GI tract, starting in the moth and ending in the toilet. RD TOOLS STAT GrowthCharts Lite makes plotting percentiles on a growth chart qick and easy. It s perfect for calclating z-scores and estimating ideal body weight. Abbott, Nestlé, and Ntricia Metabolics have very sefl apps that contain prodct gide information. Carrying arond all of those mini prodct gidebooks is mch less cmbersome when all that information is only a toch away! The USDA DRI Calclator app allows sers to enter a patient s age, height, weight, and sex to qickly estimate macrontrient and microntrient needs. As an added benefit, this app also incldes a patient edcation section for several disease states. Epocrates and CliniCalc are apps that are helpfl for those little calclations that are so tricky to remember. Using these apps, sers are qickly able to calclate corrected calcim for albmin, basal energy expenditre (for adlts), mid-parental height, corrected gestational age, and growth velocity, jst to name a few. CONSUMER INFORMATION ShopWell allows sers to inpt allergens, ingredients to avoid, and ntrients to emphasize. It provides pictres of brand name foods listed by food type and gives a score based on how it compares to each ser s established gidelines Users of this app can even scan a food label and the app will show if that particlar food contains a specific allergen! There is a great shopping gide for individals following many special diets, bt most specifically for those with mltiple food allergies. The Bathroom Map app ses GPS location to find restrooms nearby. Users can rate restrooms so the database stays relevant and p to date. This is a great tool for parents with potty training children and individals experiencing incontinence, encopresis, and rgency. The CalorieKing app has food labels for almost every food item yo cold possibly think of, inclding fresh, processed, and restarant foods. Users can change the serving size for a qick calclation that is relevant to his or her food intake. This app is great for estimating macrontrient intake sch as with a calorie cont and conting carbohydrate intake. The Fodmapdiet app incldes a seven-day men that incldes low FODMAP food items. The majority of apps that allow sers to inpt their own food intake and calorie goals while following a FODMAP diet cost money, bt this free app at least provides FODMAP followers some examples of the meals they can expect on the diet. DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER APPS YOU ARE DYING TO SHARE? DO YOU KNOW OF OR USE PAID APPS THAT ARE WELL WORTH THE MONEY? IF SO, SHARE YOUR SUGGESTIONS ON THE CPNP LISTSERV! 2

For this particlar stdy, we had chosen a tight enrollment period 24 hors so there was no time to waste. I threw some money at the friends I was ot to dinner with, drove to the hospital, and literally ran from the parking ramp to the PICU. I arrived within a half hor of receiving the call. I M HERE!!! Bt... the family had gone home for the night, and by morning or 24-hor enrollment period wold be expired for this child. Another missed opportnity! Research can be incredibly rewarding, bt oh-so-frstrating as well! What research are yo and/or yor facility working on? Let s know if yo are excited to share yor stories of what yo are working on, triblations, and sccesses of doing pediatric ntrition-related research! s at (cpnp.napsghan@gmail. com). 5 vol. 1 no. 2 smmer 2015 capitol hill DAY As the Secretary-Treasrer for CPNP, I am fortnate to also be able to sit on NASPGHAN s Pblic Affairs and Advocacy Committee (PAAC). PAAC is very active in lobbying for Medicaid reimbrsement, FDA reglations, celiac disease and glten intolerance, and medical foods coverage. As dietitians in today s changing health care insrance environment, I imagine that we all strggle with the isse of coverage of medical foods, specifically formlas and modlar prodcts. It is hard to know if all prodcts are covered nder all plans, in all states, and for all diagnoses. It s very encoraging to see that PAAC has also taken p this case and is acting to try to create niversal coverage for formlas, modlars, and thickeners. In lie of a traditional Annal Meeting next year, we will be participating in the 2016 World Congress of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Ntrition. CPNP has been asked to plan the ntrition content dring one day of this international event. Mark yor calendars for October 5 8, 2016 to join s in Montréal, Canada! Watch this short video to get a glimpse of the beaty of Montréal! (2 mintes Montreal video.avi) With a coordinated effort from the American Academy of Pediatrics, PAAC has been working with both senators and representatives to help lead legislative drafting for a bill mandating coverage of medically necessary foods and to help focs on identifying other members of Congress to co-lead legislative efforts. In the coming months, PAAC is planning on asking for a NASPGHAN wide call to action to help promote this legislation and lobbying efforts. PAAC is also planning to inclde medical foods coverage in their lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill Day, which is taking place in conjnction with the annal NASPGHAN meeting on Wednesday, October 7th. The PAAC is very interested in having spport from or dietitians. The cost for the day is $50.00, which incldes lnch and transportation. Participants will be able to register for Capitol Hill Day participation when they register for the annal meeting or CPNP symposim. If yo are interested in participating or yo wold like more information, please feel free to contact me (czoller@lriechildrens.org) or Dr. Amethyst Krbegov (amethyst.krbegov@ childrenscolorado.org) who is one of the physicians very involved and spportive of this movement. We wold love for or CPNP members to have an active role in lobbying for this isse. on the horizon: N2U NASPGHAN Ntrition University N2U is an Edcational corse organized by the NASPGHAN Fondation and spported by Ntricia North America, focsed on specialized ntrition edcation in areas associated with the practice of pediatric gastroenterology and ntrition.
