8 UNESCO: Langages matter! UNESCO promotes lingistic diversity and mltilingalism Langages, with their complex implications for identity, commnication, social integration, edcation and development, are of strategic importance for people and the planet. The International Mother Langage Day (IMLD), proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO in November 1999, celebrated every year on 21 Febrary

9 Mltilingalism and WHO WHO's mltilingal web site, pblications and other resorces ensre that health information reaches the people who need it, in the langages they can nderstand. This makes access to health information both more eqitable - and effective. Mltilingal commnication bridges gaps and fosters nderstanding between people. It allows WHO to more effectively gide pblic health practices, reach ot to international adiences, and achieve better health otcomes worldwide. In this way, mltilingal commnication is an essential tool for improving global health: "A mltilingal WHO is better eqipped to commnicate health messages, to prodce and disseminate health information and to generate, share and se knowledge abot health in an eqitable manner. It is also better placed to meet today's major pblic health challenge: strengthening health systems in order to provide essential health care for all. Mltilingalism: plan of action,

We promote teaching on these topics, as well as dialoge and mtal nderstanding across and between academics, practitioners, civil society and stdents.
