2 Risk assessment: College dorms create a high risk setting for transmission of inflenza de to shared living spaces College stdents often report being sleep deprived College stdents often report not having a healthy diet Stdents attend classes in rooms that have a large nmber of people in a small space Stdents are really social They may be participating in internships, volnteer activities and other commnity activities that pt them in contact with high risk individals The challenge: This is an age grop that is not likely to look at themselves as needing a fl shot They may be inflenced by family vales They will certainly be inflenced by peer vales They don t like sing their free time for things they don t have to do Introdcing the NJ Fl Challenge Fond ot abot the opportnity to participate over the smmer Participated in planning via teleconference The department of health provided some helpfl resorces We had follow p staff meeting to adapt these resorces to or setting Also came p with some brainstormed to come p with additional idea s for otreach 2

4 The Participants Inflenza vaccination rate for the fl season vs the season academic year: 635 stdents academic year: 812 stdents p 177 vaccines or 28% Strategies prior to this year to promote inflenza vaccine Offered opportnities for free vaccination at fl clinics We contined to offer in Health Services Have encoraged with signage in common area s of the University Center and dorms 4

5 This years program: We ran 2 fl shot clinics with stdents (did this with the help of the college of nrsing which enabled or nrsing stdents to get experience of administering vaccines) Also allowed stdents to receive the fl shot at employee fl shot clinics Contined to offer free fl shots in health services Sent ot s to stdents to commnicate availability Sent ot text messages later in the season to commnicate contined availability and shared information regarding Tamifl Used the parents FaceBook page to commnicate fl shot availability Tried to appeal to or stdents to do their part to keep high risk people safe from the fl Getting stdents to complete the srvey to win the challenge Set p laptops at a table for stdents to access the link for srvey Srvey fatige, had to provide an incentive Pt a giant poster p to show how we were doing in the competition Using competition to fel completion of srvey 5

6 Keeping everyone motivated Updates with or performance posted in exam rooms and common areas Remind stdents that getting a fl shot cold help them avoid missing classes which cold affect their grades. Getting the fl cold also affect breaks, travel plans and work load Otreach to the dorms- teamed p with hosing and residence life and the stdent government association for on site events Challenges this year: Panic related to increased media coverage of otbreaks Rnning ot of fl shots Not being able to access rapid fl kits Getting stdents to complete online NJ College Health Fl Srvey Qestions. 6
