1 FO UND ED IN Exective Director Candidate Profile
2 F O U N D E D I N The American School for the Deaf is seeking an exceptional leader to fill the role of Exective Director. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading change, staff development, fnd raising and commnication, inclding with state and federal reglators. This is a highly visible position both internally and externally within the commnity and at the state and national level. What follows, is a description of ASD and a profile of the next Exective Director. Vision Statement The American School for the Deaf will be the premier comprehensive center providing edcation and resorces for deaf and hard of hearing individals, their families, and edcational partners in Connectict and beyond. Mission Statement The American School for the Deaf serves the deaf and hard of hearing commnity as a mlti-faceted, innovative instittion dedicated to the development of intellect and the enhancement of qality of life, prodcing edcated and self-directed citizens. Philosophy Fonded in 1817, the American School for the Deaf was the first permanent school for the deaf in the United States and is a nationally renowned leader in providing comprehensive edcational programs and services for deaf and hard of hearing stdents. The school s Total Commnication philosophy embraces English, American Sign Langage, the integration of speech, aditory training, reading, writing and the se of technology as essential parts of total edcation that enables stdents to achieve langage and commnication literacy. History of ASD This is where it all began in 1817, when Thomas Hopkins Galladet, a recent Yale gradate and ordained clergyman, met the Dr. Mason Fitch Cogswell family inclding their deaf daghter, Alice. Embarking on a voyage to Erope to learn the art of edcating deaf children, Galladet encontered the exciting work of the l Istitt National de Jenes Sords de Paris (the school for the deaf in Paris). He then enlisted Larent Clerc, a talented, yong deaf teacher to join him in an historic jorney back home to establish the first permanent school for the deaf in the United States. ASD is known as the Mother School and was the birthplace of American Sign Langage. While noted for its history, ASD is a vibrant 21st Centry instittion. It has developed ctting edge programming that has been sed by schools throghot the contry. It is a site for teacher training and practicm and was a springboard from which trained and experienced edcators went forth and fonded deaf edcation schools throghot the contry. Programs ASD operates a camps-based Pre K-12th grade program, a PACES (Positive Attitdes Concerning Edcation and Socialization) program for children with emotional and behavioral challenges and an International program. In addition, ASD operates a state-wide Birth-to-Three program, varios otreach services, inclding staff placement and adiological services, and Adlt Vocational Services (AVS). Galladet-Clerc Edcation Center In September 2013, ASD opened the Galladet-Clerc Edcation Center, a state-of-the-art edcational facility designed specifically for the edcational needs of deaf and hard of hearing stdents. Hosing most of the Pre-Kindergarten- 12th grade stdent poplation, the bilding provides a learning environment specifically designed to meet the
3 niqe learning styles of deaf and hard of hearing stdents. Each classroom and learning space contains advanced technology. ASD firmly believes that technology, in concert with caring, passionate professionals, serves to level the playing field for deaf and hard of hearing stdents. To that end, all classrooms are eqipped with the newest generation of interactive whiteboards (smartboards) encoraging seamless commnication between teacher and stdent. The GCEC is the first school to tilize the state-of-the-art digital Phonak amplification system. Unlike older FM systems, the digital system eliminates noise bleed between classrooms. The bilding operates sing a comprehensive, high tech management system allowing s to manage energy needs remotely. This will aid in operational and energy efficiency. Stdent and staff safety is or highest priority, and in order to ensre their well-being, we are sing the GE Facility Commander integrated secrity management system. This sophisticated system controls access, and provides digital video srveillance, alarm monitoring, and intrsion detection. ASD also tilizes the MessageNet Emergency Management and Commnication system in order to commnicate news and emergency information in a timely, effective manner. An ASD Edcation The American School for the Deaf offers deaf and hard of hearing stdents ages 3-21 a fll range of edcational programming based on the Common Core K-12 Goals and Standards as established by the State Department of Edcation. Most stdents come to ASD from their local school districts throgh the Planning and Placement/Individal Edcation Plan process. Working together with parents and Local Edcation Athority, ASD professionals develop edcational programs designed to meet the niqe needs of each stdent. As well as being dedicated, passionate professionals, 93% of or faclty hold Masters Degrees and all are flly accredited and licensed. Please visit or website at for more detailed information. Elementary School The elementary school is home to ASD s Preschool throgh grade 8 and provides a lively and spportive learning environment. Programs are tailored to the needs of each stdent with crriclar and extracrriclar activities designed to develop langage, commnication and problem solving skills, to instill confidence, and to nrtre a lifelong love of learning. High School ASD s High School offers a comprehensive edcational program for stdents in grades 9 throgh 12 and provides individalized attention in an atmosphere designed to encorage the development of each stdent s interests and abilities. The high school is divided into three edcational strands: academic crriclm and preparation for postsecondary programs; vocational-technical edcation and preparation for post-secondary training; and preparation and training for direct entry into the workforce. PACES (Positive Attitdes Concerning Edcation and Socialization) Program The PACES program serves deaf and hard of hearing stdents whose emotional/behavioral challenges prevent them from scceeding in reglar or other special edcation settings. PACES stdents receive
4 intensive psychological services integrated into an individalized edcation plan in either a five- or seven-day program. PACES dormitories are licensed by the State of Connectict as residential treatment facilities. International Program ASD offers edcational opportnities to qalified international stdents ages The crriclm incldes the intensive stdy of English to prepare stdents for ftre stdy at a US college or niversity. A concentrated program of stdy can reslt in a high school diploma or an eqivalency certificate. ASD is approved by the Stdent Exchange Visitor Information System, which qalifies the school to isse I-20 stdent visas to qalified applicants. Residential Life Approximately 50% of stdents reside in camps dormitories dring the school week. Residential stdents arrive Snday evening or Monday morning, depending on their length of travel, and retrn home on Friday afternoon. Dring the school week, ASD s otstanding professional staff provides extensive afterschool programming and spervision. Most PACES and international stdents remain in residence on weekends.
