Animal Cell ii. Plant Cell iii. Bacteria Cell 3. Important Biology Prefixes & Suffixes 4. Open Response Directions: Welcome to NHCS Biology Class! This year you are going to be exploring how living things form and function! This summer, your job is to review, learn, and display your understanding of the Cell Membrane and Cell Organelles. Here is what you are expected to do: 1. Watch the videos below and answer the corresponding questions. These videos will provide a visual for your learning. 2. Read through the prefixes and suffixes packet. Understanding how to use to figure out definitions of words will help you not only this year, but throughout high school and beyond! 3. Test your understanding of the topic by answering an MCAS Open Response. In June, you will take the Biology MCAS, which include 4 Open Responses. We will practice scientific writing this year using Claim, Evidence, Reading (CER). Complete the accompanying worksheet and a final draft of your Open Response Answer. 4. Prove you understand the topic by creating an In-depth travel brochure 1. The brochure must be in color and include drawings. No printed pictures. 2. Must show and define all 13 organelles from the organelle worksheet. 3. Incorporate 4-6 of the prefixes/suffixes with definitions and how it relates to the cell 4. You must compare and contrast animal, plant, and bacteria cells. 5. The brochure should contain complete sentences and should be spell-checked.
2 Part One: Videos Cell Membrane: (Watch and fill in the blanks) 1. Why does soap dissolve the membrane easily? 2. What is selective permeability? How does the cell achieve this? 3. What are the major molecules in the cell membrane? 4. Define Amphipathic. How does this affect transport across the membrane? 5. What role do proteins play in transport? 6. What kinds of cells have cell walls? 7. Describe the fluid cell membrane 8. What are the two roles of cholesterol in the membrane? a. b. 9. What are glycoproteins made up of, and what is their role in the membrane? Name an important glycoprotein. 10. What are glycolipids made up of, and what is their role in the membrane? 11. Draw and describe the structure of a phospholipid - indicate the charges on the molecule. 12. Is fat = phospholipid? why/why not?
3 13. Describe the charge distribution of the membrane. 14. What are the characteristics and examples of substances that can move easily through the membrane? 15. How do proteins assist in transport? 16. What kinds of particles move through proteins? 17. What kinds of transport do proteins assist with? 18. Name two characteristics of the cell wall. 19. What material makes up the cell wall of 1. Plants: 2. Bacteria: 3. Fungi: Cell Organelles: A. Introduction: Identify the purpose of each of the following organelles and answer any corresponding questions. 1. Role of Nucleus: a. b. 2. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): a. Rough ER: b. Smooth ER: i. The rough ER has ribosomes on it so i. Where are synthesized. c. What is the ER usually attached to?
4 3. Golgi Complex: a. b. 4. Lysosomes : a. Three purposes: b. Why is it referred to as the suicide sack? 5. Vacuoles: 6. Energy organelles: a. Mitochondria: i. Purpose: ii: Why is there folding on the cristae and why is that significant? b.: Chloroplasts: i. Purpose: ii. The reason there is increase surface area is for what two reasons? 7. Ribosomes: a. 10 Part Three: MCAS Open Response On the MCAS exam there are five open response questions that you will have to answer. Throughout the school year we will work on how to figure out what the question is asking and how to write a solid 4 point response. For now, you need to answer the following question, making sure to address EACH part of the question and writing in complete sentences February Open Response: Part Four: Create Your Brochure 1. 5.
