1 PRESS PACK SCOTTISH STUDENT JOURNALISM AWARDS 2017
2 About the Scottish Student Journalism Awards The Scottish Student Journalism Awards (SSJA) is a prestigious event which recognises journalistic talent across Scotland. The competition gives journalism students, studying at colleges and universities across the country, a chance to see their work honoured by media industry professionals. The judging panel is made up of some of the most respected figures from both the print and broadcast industries in Scotland with previous panels including Scottish Sun editor Alan Muir, Media Scotland managing director Allan Rennie, and The BBC s award-winning investigative reporter Mark Daly. The ceremony gives students the opportunity to network with senior broadcasters, newspaper editors and award winning writers. Many of the winners have gone on to enjoy successful careers within the media industry. The event, in its sixth year, is run by students on the HND Media and Communications course at Glasgow Clyde College, as part of their graded-unit project. Last year we received a record number of entries and this year we hope to top that. For the first time ever, we will be streaming the SSJA on social media, and we have launched the inaugural SSJA website. We work hard to ensure we secure a judging panel representing as many major publishers and broadcasters as we can, ensuring we have a dynamic and diverse group of judges who are able to recognise and celebrate up and coming journalistic talent. Our guest speakers are always a delight and an inspiration to our student journalists. Last year s speakers entertainment and music journalist Beverley Lyons, Scottish Sun feature writer Matt Bendoris and writer and broadcaster Hugh Keevins brought humour, insight and talent to the ceremony. The funding for the event is provided by the generous sponsors we have worked in partnership with including the Scottish Daily Record and The Sunday Mail, STV, Your Event Scotland, The Sun, SQA, News Scotland CIC, the Society of Editors, Glasgow Caledonian University, the National Union of Students, Glasgow Clyde College and All Media Scotland. On previous occasions, some sponsors have opted to give prizes to their chosen category. These prizes have included work experience and internships, cash prizes, and holidays abroad. The ceremony will take place on Thursday the 25 th of May in the impressive five-level Corinthian Club in Glasgow City Centre. In this media pack you will find information about the SSJA including information about the previous hosts, guest speakers, judges, shortlist judges and sponsors. Every team of students who have ran the SSJAs, every judge, guest speaker and sponsor, and all the college and universities and students who have supported us, have helped shape the SSJA to become the prestigious, nationally recognised awards ceremony it is today.

10 SSJA 2017 TEAM Jake Beaton I am a second year HND media and communications student. My interest in the SSJA was a big reason I was drawn to this course. I feel the experienced I have gained inside and out with the course has made me the ideal candidate for being responsible for the running of the Scottish student journalism awards. My work promoting the Cardonald campus gym demanded I be focused and confident when pitching to PR professionals, the hard work put in resulted in a win for my team. The SSJA will be a new challenge for me though I look forward to the struggles I will overcome to bring about a successful night. Rebecca Keenan I am a second year HND Media & Communications student from Glasgow Clyde College. I have chosen to be a part of the SSJA team as I feel I will contribute a lot with the knowledge I have gained from being in this course, such as working as part of team to achieve a Fairtrade status for the college campuses. I feel SSJA is a great challenge within itself and I am prepared to work hard and set a hold myself to a high standard to make this a successful event. I also feel this is a great opportunity to network within the media and journalism industry this will improve my skills and expand my knowledge within the marketing and events field. I hope to maintain and improve on the standards set by the previous award ceremonies, and with the team assembled I feel this is very achievable. Rhona Rollo I am currently studying in my second year of HND Media & Communications, and would like to use the skills I have learned during my time at Glasgow Clyde College to be part of successfully running, organising and holding the Scottish Student Journalism Awards. This year, I was a big part of helping my college gain Fair Trade status by hosting and organising a Fair Trade Banana Flash Mob, which has encouraged me to push myself further. The SSJA will be a great challenge, which I am looking forward to being a part of. I am confident that the team and I will be able to hold a successful event for all involved.
11 Rebecca Sloan I am a full time HND Media and Communications student at Glasgow Clyde College and have taken on the Scottish Student Journalism Awards I decided to take on this challenge as after studying nearly 2 years in the media, I have a great passion for events, public relations and advertising, all of which are needed for this event, and believe that the team that has formed will pull off one of the best award ceremony s the SSJAs has had yet. Although I understand how much work will need done and the difficulties we will all face, I think that I have the knowledge, patience and determination to succeed and high spirits that the team will work well together. This is an amazing opportunity for me to mingle with journalists and professionals in the media industry and I will learn so much throughout the whole process, I can t wait to get started. Naoise Warner As you will have guessed, I am also a Second Year student studying Media and Communications at Glasgow Clyde College. Last year I volunteered for the Scottish Student Journalism Awards and from then onwards, it inspired me and made me passionate about planning the event in I wanted to challenge myself with creating an award ceremony that will drive students to push for the career they are driven towards. Through my varying college classes, I have developed a wide range of skills in which I will utilise to make the awards a successful night for everyone involved.
