1 S A I N T B E R N A R D Breed First - Obedience Master 1 {OM1} Title WDCH Shadow Mtn PlayIt Again V Reema CD, CDX, UD, UDX, OM1, GN, VER, RN, RA, RE, RAE, TD, TDX, DD, DDX By Hazel Lovey Olbrich Sam was whelped at the home of Rob and Marcie Boyens, and lived until close to her third birthday at the home of her cobreeders, Karen and Paul Bodeving. Paul and Karen recognized her talent for obedience and offered her to me as my next obedience dog in November of She seemed like a darling dog to me, and I brought her home. Although friendly and outgoing, Sam is slow to trust, and it took several months for her to trust me, and for me in turn to learn how she learned. However, we adjusted to each other and her training progressed very well. I realized early on that she was limited in her jump height to about 16 (she needed to jump 20 for AKC obedience). I learned, with the help of slow motion video, that her shoulders were very tight. With the help of her sports medicine vet, Dr. Wendy Wallace, DVM, who used chiropractic and acupuncture, massage that I learned to do to loosen her shoulders, and Cavelitti work to teach her to extend her reach, she learned to be a competent and confident jumper. Sam s long suits include her ability to maintain attention and her innately obedient nature. An animal communicator that I met at a dog show offered me the information that Sam s mantra is I am a good dog. That is certainly very true. The training challenge that we had was that, afraid to make a mistake, she would freeze and do nothing if she wasn t completely sure what to do. Eventually I was able to convince her that it was OK to be wrong with sincere effort and that it was not OK not to try. In addition to her desire to please, Sam also very much likes to be touched. That meant that every time I went into the obedience ring I had my two strongest reinforcers with me; my approval and my hands. Not many obedience competitors are lucky enough to be able to take their primary and best rewards with them into the ring. Of all the obedience exercises, the one she most enjoyed and excelled at was heeling. People still tell me how much they enjoyed watching her heel with me. In this exercise she exhibited the utmost in willingness, enjoyment, and precision and it was a pleasure to show how she could excel in the teamwork required of this most challenging of all the obedience exercises. After Sam earned her UD title it took us about 25 shows to earn her UDX in March of 2014, four short years after I brought her home. At the same trial when she earned her final UDX leg she also earned the remaining points she needed for her Obedience Master (OM) title, my other goal. She was three months past her seventh birthday at the time. I showed her twice after that: once to support the SBCPC obedience trial (her last HIT), and once to earn the final leg of her VER title (1 st place). We have also participated in team obedience. In addition to being able to earn the very good scores required for an OM title, she did very well in and very much enjoyed Rally, which is primarily an exercise in the fundamentals of heeling. Although not innately gifted at tracking, her long suits (focus and obedient nature) allowed her to earn her TD and TDX titles on our first attempts. On her TDX test, all that I did was tell her to Go Find! at the start of the track, stop to pick up the intermediate articles that she indicated, and then follow my dog to the final article. Good girl! As I write this Sam is now eight years old and retired from active competition. She enjoys robust health, aided by good genetics, good heart, good hips, and good elbows. I hope she follows her Aunt Roxy s footsteps and has many more birthdays in her future.
