1 International workshop on Invasive Species Identification and Management in the Tropics 12-15, May 2014 Hotel Ndiambour, Dakar Senegal Trip Report Country Visited: Senegal Dates of Travel: May 10-17, 2014 Travelers Names and Affiliations: Dr. Md. Shahadath Hossain, Assistant Coordinator, IPM IL (CRSP), Buy In Project, Bangladesh Site, BARI Campus, Gazipur-1701 Purpose of Trip: To participate in an International workshop on Invasive Species Identification and Management in the Tropics Site Visited: 1. Tomato and Papaya field visit at Direction De La Protection Des Vegetaux (DPV), Dakar 2. Field visit of different vegetables and fruits like, okra, peanut, tomato, cabbage, Mung bean, Mango etc. at Mbaukh and KarMusa, Dakar 3. Whole sale vegetable market visit at Notto, Dakar Description of Activities/Observations: May 11, 2014 Arrival in Senegal: On May 10, 2014 I started my journey from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Bangladesh for Senegal by Emirates Airways via Dubai, UAE. On May 11, 2014, I reached at Ndiambour hotel, Rue Carnot, Dakar, Senegal at about 15:00. I met with few participants of workshop, Dr. Marco Arevalo, Mr. Nagendra Subedi, Ms. Mafruha Afroj. I discussed about schedule of workshop with them and stay night at hotel.
2 May 12, 2014 Inaugural session: At 8:00 I reached at conference room of Ndiambour hotel. Then I completed my registration at loby. After registration I met with all participants and introduced myself with them. At 9:00 inaugural session was started which was chaired by Dr. Sally Miller. ISRA representative, CORAF Representative Dr. Tounou Agbeko Kodjo Jean-Pierre and IPM Innovation Lab Director R. Muniappan addressed on that session. The workshop was then declared open. Technical session After coffee break and group photo session at 10:30 presentation was started. Dr. Muniappan presented his topic on Invasive Arthropods and weeds. Then, Sally Miller, Prof. Ohio State University, Mr. Nagendra Subedi, Mr. Papa Demba Kane, CDH presented their topics one by one. After presentation of each topic, a threadbare live discussion was held. Then the session was closed for lunch. After lunch, the presentation session was started again. Dr. Sally Miller presented on Managing bacterial wilt in Tomato in Florida, USA at 14:00. Mr. Boubacar Drame, ISRA, Dr. Jesca Mbaka, KARI, Dr. Marco Arevalo, Guetemala and Dr. R. Muniappan, Virginia Tech also presented their respective topics in this session. This session ended at May 13, 2014 Field Trip: At 9:00 I started for field visit led by Dr. Dienaba Sall/ Dr. Muni and Papa Demba from hotel Ndiambour using Microbus with other participants and Trainers and arrived at (DPV), Dakar at about 10:30. There I visited some tomato fields infested with leaf miner, Tuta absoluta. There Dr. Muniappan showed larvae of Tuta absoluta and its damage symptoms. I also visited papaya mealybug infested orchard. From DPV campus, I collected some samples to observe parasitoids under microscope. Then I went to DPV office with other participants. At we started for other fields at Mbaukh and KarMusa to visit and collect sample of different vegetables crops like, okra, peanut, tomato, cabbage, Mung bean etc. I observed and collected insect infested and diseased plant samples for identification in laboratory. There I also visited some Mango orchards.
3 I visited a whole sale vegetable market at Notto, Dakar. There I saw many vegetables like, brinjal, tomato, cabbage, carrot, cassava, capsicum etc. I saw a new type of brinjal there. After visiting the wholesale vegetable market, I went to another farm where I visited some brinjal and okra fields. Then after having lunch, I returned at hotel at about May 14, 2014 At 9.00 presentation was started by Dr. R.D. Timila and Mr. Ram B.KC on Bacterial wilt management and Grafting technology in Nepal. Then Mr. Boubacar Drame presented his presentation on Bacterial wilt in Senegal. After presentation, hands on training on tomato and brinjal grafting was started led by Mr. Papa Demba, CDH. I participated in that exercise. After lunch the session on Ralstonia solanacearum diagnosis was started led Dr. Sally Miller and Dr. Zachary Kinyua, KARI which continued up to At evening a farewell dinner was arranged at French cultural Centre at Dakar by host country. I participated in that dinner with other participants. May 15, 2014 At 9.00 workshop on Papaya mealybug was started where Dr. Muni presented his presentation on taxonomy, distribution, physical, chemical and and biological control of papaya mealybug. After his presentation a threadbare discussion was held on papaya mealybug. After Dr. Muni s presentation, the hands on procedure of identification of papaya mealybug, its parasitoid, mummy etc. were showed through live stereo microscopic presentation. I learned many important and practical knowledge about identification and control of papaya mealybug from that presentation. After this session, Participants were divided into five groups for identification of symptoms from collected plant samples. Then each group observed the samples and made their comments on name of disease/insect, causal agent, symptoms etc. Lastly Sally Miller made her comments on identification of pest and diseases of collected samples. I learned a lot from this session. Closing ceremony At last certificate giving ceremony has been held. Dr. Muniappan, Dr. Sally A. Miller and Dr. Dienaba Sall distributed the certificate among the participants. Finally Dr. Muni declared the closing of workshop with due thanks. Departure from Senegal
