1 In this newsletter.to be shared with parents and swimmers! Swimmer Development Plans ( attachment) Thoughts from Josh Caps & Quotes Dates for your Diaries Committee Goalsetting Entering Meets & Bad Training Habits to Break County Finals Swimmer Profiles & Land Training Please note that swimming continues as normal throughout Half-Term.
2 Thoughts from Josh: This is typically a time to reflect on the past year and to look ahead to the future. With that in mind we would like to bring out some swim development plans for our swimmers in the next few weeks. These plans will ask you to set goals for the following year. You may have several goals but remember it is difficult to focus on more than one thing at a time. Setting targets may sound boring to some of you, but just spending 10 minutes writing down a plan of where you want to be will make a major difference to your sessions when it makes you realise what direction you need to focus on. You may be tempted to write down that your goal is to achieve a certain time for your favourite event. While that is great to have a time in mind and it is measurable you also need to be able to see past that. You need to know HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ACHIEVE THIS? This is where it gets more difficult and you will need to start becoming critical of your own training. Do you attend enough sessions? As a senior swimmer, could I be staying that extra 30 minutes on Monday/Friday? Do I really focus on my own efforts when I swim? Do I have a target for EVERY session? If you are struggling to think of what it is that you need to work on then consider the following. How many times has a coach had to nag you about something? It could be anything. If you have been told multiple times over several weeks or months then maybe you haven t been focusing as well as you could. Bad habits form easily and take concentrated, consistent effort to get rid of. Once you have finished noting down your own goals, then you need to bring the sheet to the coach. Every Friday we will try and be available to help or review what to work on and we may also be able to offer some video feedback with the GoPro if and when time allows. Josh White (Head Coach) Caps New club members can buy plain RSC caps from Josh for 5 (cash or cheque). An order for named caps will take place again in November. Quote of the Month: There may be people who have more talent than you, but there s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do. Derek Jeter (American baseball player)

4 Goalsetting (for Swimming, School and Life): The simple fact is that for goals to be powerful, they should be designed to be SMART. There are many variations of what SMART stands for, but the essence is this goals should be: Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant Time Bound Set Specific Goals Your goal must be clear and well defined. Vague or generalized goals (I want to swim faster) are unhelpful because they don't provide sufficient direction. Remember, you need goals to show you the way. You can get where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up. Set Measurable Goals Include precise details, dates, times, and so on in your goals so that you can measure your degree of success. If your goal is simply defined as "To improve streamlining" how will you know when you have been successful? Without a way to measure your success you miss out on the celebration that comes with knowing you have actually achieved something. Set Attainable Goals Make sure that it's possible to achieve the goals you set. If you set a goal that you have no hope of achieving, you will only demoralize yourself and erode your confidence. However, resist the urge to set goals that are too easy. Accomplishing a goal that you didn't have to work hard for can be anticlimactic at best, and can also make you fear setting future goals that carry a risk of non-achievement. By setting realistic yet challenging goals, you hit the balance you need. These are the types of goals that require you to "raise the bar" and they bring the greatest personal satisfaction. Set Relevant Goals Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your swimming to take. By keeping goals in line with this, you'll develop the focus you need to get ahead and achieve what you want.
5 Set Time-Bound Goals You goals must have a deadline: this term, this year! Again, this means that you know when you can celebrate success. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and achievement will come that much quicker. Key Points Goal setting is much more than simply saying you want something to happen. Unless you clearly define exactly what you want and understand why you want it in the first place, your odds of success are considerably reduced. By following the SMART Rules of Goal Setting you can set goals with confidence and enjoy the satisfaction that comes along with knowing you achieved what you set out to do. So, what will you decide to accomplish today? Set goals that motivate you. Get Out And Love Swimming! Entering Meets The Club supports a number of meets where we also have to provide officials and team support. Entries for these meets must go through the club. However, parents can enter other meets if they wish to, by making their own entries. There is information regarding meets on the website and/or on Facebook, but if you are unsure about whether a meet is appropriate for your child then speak with one of the coaches. This is the link to find official ASA times for your child for meets where qualification times are required: This is the link to find ASA licensed meets: This Month s Bad Training Habit to Break: Leave 5 seconds apart and set off in order of speed for a particular training set so that you are unlikely to catch the swimmer in front. It disrupts training when swimmers stop and stand up in the middle of a lap. For instance, if you re the fastest kicker, go first; if you re the slowest backstroker, go last, etc.
