Snapshot Make sure you have your Blood and its cells packet - you will need notes on blood cells to play a game
Due - Intro to CV unit packet - Blood and its cells packet - UNIT 1 PROJECT - If not turned in you are getting a ZERO on a TEST GRADE Agenda - Reproductive unit 1 section 2 INB check - Heads Up - blood cells review game - Notes on blood! - Mini research: blood disorders and pathogens
Heads Up - Blood Cells! Work in groups of 4 Person 1: Grab a card - DON T READ IT!!!! You will hold/tape it to your forehead Ask your team members YES or NO questions about your identity 5. Once you figure it out, the next person in your team will repeat this with a new card 6. Continue this until your team can describe/figure out all 7 cards 7. First two teams to finish get EC!
Blood Notes! Blood - a connective tissue! The cells are suspended in a liquid matrix - 8% of your body weight = blood - Males = 5-6 liters - Females = 4-5 liters Contents - When centrifuged, blood separates into 3 layers (The % of RBCs = hematocrit)
What is a centrifuge, you ask?

If we start off as a single cell (zygote) where do all the different types of blood cells come from??? - When we start off, our first cells are embryonic stem cells - they can turn into any type of cell How does a stem cell know what it should become? - Simple answer: Cell communication (via hormones, proteins, etc.) FYI: - Embryonic stem cells can become any cell - Adult stem cells exist in different organs - can only become a cell type for that organ
Blood cell creation - Hematopoiesis Hematopoietic stem cells (AKA hemocytoblasts) - come from red bone marrow - These stem cells can differentiate into different blood cells!

Hemoglobin - A Molecule of Life A protein found in the blood of vertebrates. Made of four subunits. Each one contains a heme group that holds one iron atom - The iron atoms are what bind to oxygen atoms. Why is our blood red?? Think: What color does iron turn when it oxidizes (rusts)?

Hemoglobin & Protein Misfolding - Sickle Cell A mutation that is genetically inherited; recessive. Anemia a) Normal and Sickle Haemoglobin in which Glutamic acid residue at position 6 is replaced with Valine b) Polymerisation of sickle Haemoglobin to form crystals c) Normal and Sickled Red Blood Cells in circulation, portraying problems that arise from sickle cell shaped blood cells.
Affected demographics According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control) SCD: But why is the African American community impacted so heavily? - Affects approximately 100,000 Americans - 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births - About 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with sickle cell trait (SCT) Those carrying the trait had 60% higher survivorship of malaria (CDC)

Prodigy (Mobb Deep) By the time the rapper Prodigy sang what would become the most famous lyric of his decades-long musical career I m only 19, but my mind is old he had already suffered through greater physical pain than most people will experience in a lifetime Prodigy, one half of the groundbreaking hip-hop duo Mobb Deep, was diagnosed as an infant with a severe form of sickle cell anemia, a blood disease marked by debilitating bouts of bodily pain. It didn t stop him from revolutionizing rap music in the 1990s with the group s bleak, foreboding vignettes of street life in New York City It made me a better business person, having sickle cell. And it also stopped me from destroying my body with drugs and alcohol and all that, he said. It s like a domino effect. That caused me to be a better person because when you take care of your health, you start looking at life different. And you start looking at people different. And your actions and your thoughts different.
Car o t y Blood bank technologist - Work in hospitals, blood donor centers, transfusion services, research labs, transplant centers, and more - Collect blood from donors, process donor blood types for matches, screen for bloodborne pathogens, prepare extra blood for storage - Coursework: molecular testing, immunology, genetics, regenerative medicine, cell therapy, transfusion and transplantation practices Charles Drew:
Blood disorders & pathogens mini research You are a medical specialist treating a patient for a blood disorder or pathogen. (Select what specific disorder or pathogen your patient has) (Disorder implies genetic Pathogen is contagious) 1. Name and describe the condition your patient has: a. Causes (identify specific virus, gene, etc.) (If contagious, how is it spread?) b. Common symptoms or complications / impacts on patient s life c. The demographic most commonly affected? Is there a reason for this? d. Identify treatments or cures e. Famous/real life people with this condition (include their name) f. Something you want outsiders to know about your patient or their condition - something positive and helpful
