4 Cnsensus Sa Paul/Warsaw The literature is clear that bth children and adults perfrm better with tw cchlear implants than with ne. Bilaterally implanted patients can benefit frm all three effects attributed t binaural hearing: the squelch effect, ludness summatin and head shadw effect in better sund lcalizatin and speech understanding in a nisy envirnment. N statistically significant difference in perfrmance f the first and the secnd implant in majrity f cases. There is a cnsiderable benefit in acquiring language cmpetence by children implanted bilaterally when cmpared t unilateral pediatric CI users. In subjective pinins f adults, bilateral stimulatin cnsiderably imprves quality f life when cmpared t unilateral electrical stimulatin. It is recmmended fr small children t be implanted simultaneusly if n ther cntraindicatins exist. The critical perid in sequential cchlear implantatin is nt cnsidered a crucial factr fr achieving i benefit frm bilateral l stimulatin. Children implanted bilaterally under the age f ne can reach the hearing cmpetence level cmparable t kids with nrmal hearing. Bilateral cchlear implantatin in nw accepted medical practice and is cnsidered methd f chice in children and adults with prfund hearing lss.
