1 1 EPILEPSY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN JSMU RESEARCH SOCIETY, under the banner of JSMU STUDENT COUNCIL in collaboration with NATIONAL EPILEPSY CENTRE has been arranging an Epilepsy Awareness Campaign during the month of February. A bunch of energetic students belong to different batches of SMC, IPS and SIOHS worked together to serve the community and helped to spread awareness about Epilepsy in every nook and corner. The OBJECTIVES of the campaign were: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) To aware the teachers and students about Epilepsy. To tell them about the causes, triggers and various presentations of Epilepsy. To guide them, how to manage the seizures. To remove the stigma suffered by epileptic persons. To remove myths and misconceptions. TRAINING AT NATIONAL EPILEPSY CENTRE These seminars feature presentations by the well-trained Speakers. Training was conducted by well-known Neurology Specialists of National Epilepsy Centre, Dr. Zarine Mogal and Dr. Hiba Mahmud.
2 2 It is an NGO- run institution exclusively for epilepsy. It provides holistic management to the people with epilepsy. Dr. Zarine Mogal and Dr. Hiba from this center trained our presenters namely, Eraj Aftab, Wajiha Hasan, Misbah Zaheer, Usama Asad, Ummaya Azim, Maham Siddique and Usman Shabbir. AWARENESS SESSION AT VARIOUS SCHOOLS EAB HAROON BAHRIA SCHOOL
3 3 The 10 th February marked as the start of Epilepsy Awareness Campaign. The first school that visited was EAB HAROON BAHRIA SCHOOL, where speakers Misbah Zaheer and Usman Shabbir addressed the students and teachers about epilepsy, its prevalence, causes and tiggers. They also guided them on first hand management of epilepsy. BAHRIA COLLEGE KARSAZ On 12 th February, the INTERNATIONAL EPILEPSY DAY, students of JSMU visited to BAHRIA COLLEGE KARSAZ. Misbah Zaheer and Ummaya Azim were the presenters. The topics which discussed by the speakers were: What is epilepsy? What are the causes of epilepsy? Can anyone have epilepsy? Does epilepsy strike on particular age? Management of epilepsy. How epilepsy affects a person s life? About rights of an Epileptic person.
4 4 Session was conducted in an interactive manner in which lectures were given to students and followed by discussions that included questions and answers. QUIZ questions were also asked by the presenters for which students were awarded with gifts.
5 5 A SKIT was performed by talented volunteers Ali Nizami, Usama Asad, Shireen Khan, Nasir Khan, Eraj Aftab, Wajiha Hasan, Hassan Zulfi and Hafiz Syed Mubbashir. The skit portrayed a child with acute epileptic attack and how the society deals with such situations, giving the message of what one should not do and do. A PHOTOBOOTH was also set by the students, with handmade props made by JSMU CREATIVE SOCIETY. Props and frames portraying support and empathy for Epilepsy and epileptic persons.
6 6 Heads of JSMU Creative Society ST. PATRICK S SCHOOL On 13 th February, our team visited Saint Patrick s school. A well trained speaker Maham Siddiqui addressed the gathered students and faculty about epilepsy, its prevalence, causes and management.
7 7 A PHOTO BOOTH was arranged having beautiful carted props and accessories made by Areesha Shakeel, Gul Saba, Kainat Sohail, Diya Nisar, Sabrina Ahmed, Irtiqa Ahmed and Nasir Khan under the banner of JSMU Creative Society. HAPPY PALACE SCHOOL
8 8 On 14 th February, Eraj Aftab gave the presentation regarding the knowledge of epilepsy, stigma faced by the epileptic persons and its management to O and A Level students of senior section in Happy Palace School. Arrangement of Photo booth and distribution of broachers on Epilepsy Awareness was also done. SCINOSA DAY HOME
9 9 SCINOSA Day Home is a SPECIAL SCHOOL, therefore they usually encounter CP children fighting epilepsy. The teachers play main role in acceptance and character building of a child who has seizures. On 16 th February, Eraj Aftab and Wajiha Hasan delivered sufficient knowledge and understanding of how can a teacher educate all students about epilepsy and influence the way in which children respond to this disorder. NAVAL COMMUNITY CENTRE On 22 nd February, JSMU student council and team of epilepsy awareness campaign are going to organize an epilepsy awareness seminar at Naval Community Centre in the supervision of
10 10 Assosiate Professor and Chairperson core committee Student Council JSMU, Dr. Ghazala Usman. In Naval Community Center, students and faculty of seven to eight schools under Navy Haroon Hub Bahria Society will be gathered. Here our presenters Misbah Zaheer and Usman Shabbir will demonstrate about epilepsy and our talented companions will perform a skit to convey the message of removing myths and managing the acute attacks of epilepsy. A photo booth will also be arranged for students. CLOSING CEREMONY The closing ceremony of this entire event will be organized on 24 th February at JSMU. It will be a training workshop of first aid management of epileptic attack. Teachers from various institutes will attend the workshop. CHIEF GUEST:
11 Dr. Hasan Aziz, the pioneer of Neurology in Pakistan and associated with Jinnah 11 Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi, Pakistan for over four and a half decades, presently as Emeritus Professor of Neurology. President of the NGO-run National Epilepsy Centre at JPMC Comprehensive Epilepsy Control Programme of Pakistan and Epilepsy Support Pakistan; Pakistan Chapter of International Bureau of Epilepsy. Speakers: Dr. Zarine Mogal, discussing about FIRST AID MANAGEMENT OF EPILEPTIC ATTACK A consultant neurologist at Sindh Government Hospital and extends volunteer services at the National Epilepsy Centre, Karachi. A graduate of Dow Medical College, she went on to do
12 12 Diploma in Clinical Neurology and then M.D Neurology under supervision of Prof. Hasan Aziz at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi and Fellowship in Clinical Epileptology at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia Dr. Ghazala Usman will speak upon THE MISCONCEPTION AND MYTHS REGARDING EPILEPSY. MBBS, MPH, MHPE, DIPLOMA IN BIOMEDIACAL ETHICS The associate professor of community medicine department of Jinnah Sindh Medical University and the Chairperson student core committee, JSMU. For years, she has been working for community and has conducted various awareness programs. She has been spreading knowledge of preventive measures for common community based issues.
