2 Background Drug Demand Reduction a global issue needs united efforts to control or reduce its demand. Pakistan is facing major problems regarding drug cultivation and drug users. The effective steps taken by Pakistan Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) in the to reduce drug cultivation and get success to reduce its demand as well. The United nations welcome the decline of poppy cultivation in the Pakistan in its annual report 2012, but in the same breath they added that the country is a major route for the smuggling of drugs cultivated in Afghanistan, primarily through Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan, and that drug cultivation can resurface in these areas if the Anti-Narcotics Force is not strict in its surveillance. One-third of drugs produced in Afghanistan are smuggled to other countries via the coastal areas of Baluchistan. The UN officials report Global numbers The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released the annual report about the state of drug cultivation, production, usage and transport in New York. According to the report, at least 5% of the world s adult population, or about 230 million people, are estimated to have used an illicit drug at least once in Some $68 billion is generated globally from illicit drugs annually, and is mainly used in terrorist activities, human trafficking and the smuggling of arms. According to the UNODC, $27 to $30 billion worth of drugs are smuggled from Afghanistan, via Pakistan, to other parts of the world annually; of this, drugs worth $1.5 billion stay in Pakistan. Drug abuse and illicit trafficking continue to have a profoundly negative impact on development and stability across the world, the report says. Heroin, cocaine and other drugs continue to kill around 200,000 people a year, bringing misery to thousands of other peoples, insecurity and the spread of HIV, the report adds. Drug Cultivation Global opium production amounted at 7,000 tons in 2011, up from the low levels of 2010 when diseases wiped out almost half of the crop yield. Afghanistan maintained its position as the largest producer and the country s opium production increased by 61%, from 3,600 tons in 2010 to 5,800 tons in High prices and increase in demand are making opium production more attractive to farmers in South East Asia, the report says. Poppy cultivation in South East Asia jumped 16% from 41,000 hectares in 2010 to almost 48,000 hectares in Overall cultivation of opium doubled in South East Asia, Moreover, transit countries are no longer simply links in the chain of supply. About half of the cocaine trafficked through West and Central Africa now remains in the region. The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) ANF is a federal executive bureau of the Government of Pakistan, tasked with combating the drug smuggling and use within Pakistan. The ANF is not only combating against the smugglers in the mountains but also doing awareness campaigns among the students and common people in the city to create strong well against the drugs. Alfalah development Foundation ADF Alfalah Development Foundation (ADF) is a non-profit non-governmental organization (NGO). It has been actively fulfilling its social responsibility in the development sector since October 2005 until it got registered in July 2008 under the Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies (Registration & Control) Ordinance 1961 with Social Welfare Department NWFP. ADF is also registered with Federal Board of Revenue. The organization has taken a wide range of initiatives such as institutional training on monitoring and evaluation techniques, capacity building of volunteers on various social development concepts, project planning & implementation, youth empowerment, skills development, streamlining out-of-school children towards education, health & hygiene promotion, clean drinking water schemes, psychosocial support, medical camps, environment, etc. Report Workshop on Drug Demand Reduction Page 2 of 8

3 ADF s Vision: ADF s vision is to provide the communities with a platform of outstanding quality, sustainable, cost effective and valuable mechanisms for social development. ADF s Mission: Our mission is to engage local youth for prioritizing problems in target area through expert opinion and find out their solutions by providing or/and arranging resources. Meeting with Principal Peshawar Public School & College (PPSC) A meeting held on 15 th January 2013 with the Principal Mr. Zait Ur Rehman to discuss and finalize the date and type of activities ADF would like to carry out under the Workshop on Drug Demand Reduction. The Principal agreed and appreciated joint efforts for arranging the workshop with the support of the ANF. 8 th February 2013 was decided as the workshop date and ADF may carry out the preliminary activity of the Workshop in the 1 st week of February. A group of volunteer s students and teachers were identified to help for the efficient and effective implementation of the workshop. Objectives of the Workshop: To create awareness about the illegal drugs and its impact on the community To involve students in the discussion & thinking processes for reducing drug demand in the community Pre-Workshop Activities: The activities started one week before the workshop day. The purpose of initiating pre workshop activities was to involve students in a manner to enhance their understanding of the concept. A notice was circulated in the classrooms and personal lectures were delivered by ADF staff to motivate the students for effective participation in the competitions and workshop. As a result, more than fifty students showed interests to participate in the different competitions. The Competitions Intra class competitions started in the following categories: 1. Speech 2. Story Writing & Telling 3. Posters Drawing 4. Quiz Competition The following TORs / rules were agreed upon for each competition: 1. Description regarding Drug Demand reduction ( provided by ADF) 2. General knowledge regarding Pakistan 3. Course books Urdu, Islamite and History Marking criteria: One Correct answer 10 marks Inter & Intra Class Competitions: 11 students were identified for the speech, 13 for the story writing, eight teams for the quiz and 14 students for the poster drawing competition. After tough competition finalists came out from the each in every competition. Lt.Col. Allah Nawaz was the honorable Chief Guest at the occasion. The workshop started at 9:00am with recitation from Holy Quraan. Welcome address delivered by the Principal Dr. Zait Ur Rahman. Responsibilities of the Judges for the competitions were shared among College Lecturers Mr. Shoab Awan, Mr. Khalid Khan and Mr. Shahab ud Mabood. In the speech competition all three finalists delivered their speeches. As the speeches were refined several times during pre-workshop activities, that s why the speeches were very much appreciated by participating teachers and students for its contents and style of delivery. The Judges declared Mr. Hamza as 1 st and Mr. Waseem as 2 nd and Mr. Usman as 3 rd position holder. Report Workshop on Drug Demand Reduction Page 6 of 8

7 There were 3 teams namely Tigers, Warriors and Panthers for quiz competition. Only college students from first and second year participated in the Quiz. In this competition, 06 questions were asked from each team related to drugs during the first round. In the second round 06 questions were asked about Pakistan and 06 from the college course books. In the due course, 12 questions were asked from the audience from the Hall and prizes were given for answering correct answer. In the next round of quiz competition 06 questions asked from each teams again regarding drugs. In this way a total of 18 questions were asked from each team. At the end of the competition the Team Tiger won 1st position with 150 marks out of 180. Whereas Panthers and Worriers were declared as 2 nd position holder by securing 140 marks out of 180. In Poster competitions the participants were asked to display their posters in front of Judges and the Chief Guests and audience. The judges announced Mr. Wheed Ajmal as 1 st and Mr. Shakil as 2 nd and Mr. Shahid as 3 rd position holder. The Chief Guest announced at this occasion that the successful winner of this round will have a chance to see his poster in the Annual magazine of ANF which is published and circulated all over Pakistan. In the Story writing/telling competitions Mr. Faizaan won the first prize, Mohammad Ali and Abdul Haseeb secured 2 nd and 3 rd prizes respectively. The purpose of holding this competition was to enable college students to adapt a style of presentation which is the most attractive and attention grabbing way of communication. In this way, the teller expresses heart felt feelings and the listener understand the message very clearly and puts him self in the shoes of that miserable character in the story about whom the drug story was written. The Chief Guest Lt. Col. Allah Nawaz delivered a very emotional lecture to the students. He shared his life real stories about success and failure. He also delivered a detailed presentation on Anti Narcotics Force objectives, achievements, setup and working procedures. 8 smuggling of the illicit drugs from Afghanistan to Pakistan, he added. He appreciated efforts of the Alfalah Development Foundation ADF for the successful arrangement of the workshop. He urged the students to avoid drugs at any cost not only for their own benefit but also for others sake. He advised the students to work for the community welfare and join hand in creating awareness to reduce drug demand among community to make drug free Pakistan. Towards the end of the workshop the Chief Guest distributed prizes and certificates among position holders in competitions. The Chairperson ADF Ms. Zohar Aslam presented vote of thanks to the Chief Guest and all the participating students and teachers.
