1 SESSION HANDOUT Let s Get The Party Started On Four Wheels JoAnne Fluke ZIN Member, Kansas, USA
2 SESSION HANDOUT Presenter JoAnne Fluke As a little girl JoAnne loved to dance! A lot of people thought since JoAnne didn t have normal legs there was no way she could dance. JoAnne quickly showed them they were wrong by dancing on her hands. Unfortunately as she got older her strength weakened. In 2007 JoAnne started a non-profit Organization called, Groovability. Groovability is an organization that brings movement to people who use wheelchairs. The first way Groovability brought movement to people who use wheelchairs was through Wheelchair Ballroom Dancing. This movement became such a part of her life that TLC did a documentary called, Dancer With Tiny Legs. Through working with her Zumba Mentor, Tony Witt her passion was ignited to help people who use wheelchairs to become fit. And as we all know what better way than through Zumba. My dream is to give everyone who uses a wheelchair the opportunity to, Join the Party, the Zumba Party!!! Schedule 10 min. Introduction 20 min. Understanding Your Audience 30 min. Making The Party Inclusive 20 min. Inclusive Merengue/Salsa 20 min. Inclusive Cumbia/Reggaeton 20 min. Master Class Session Objective To provide the Zumba experience for the wheelchair user To provide a safe and fun cardio exercise program Increase flexibility and mobility Improve posture by utilizing core muscles Improve breathing capacity Improve cognitive functionality History & Background There is a saying in the Zumba fitness world that says, Zumba is for everyone. That is very true, but which type of Zumba class is right for a person in a wheelchair? The wheelchair user has never had a viable option to get the full Zumba experience, UNTIL NOW! Application of the Zumba Formula As with all of the programs with Zumba, you must use the formula. o Z=mc 2 Music, Core Steps, Choreography Musically, nothing is different than for any other Zumba specialty program, however if you are moving at a modified pace, it may be necessary to utilize one move for more than one part of the song to get adequate repetition.
