Where are we headed? We will explore design and components of fitness I taught with my middle school students targeting SHAPE America s Standard #3. A physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.

Participant Goals Become familiar with the use of FITstep Pro pedometers Find at least one thing from the SBS MVPA Challenge that that might fit into your program

How will we get there? Take A Trip Through The Unit Experience Selected Components Questions?

Unit Design - Backward Design Big Idea & Unit Questions Know & Understand Do Formative Assessment Summative Assessment Lessons Reflection

Big Idea - Unit Questions Big Idea If exercise came in the form of a pill, It would be the most widely prescribed and beneficial medication in the nation. ~ Robert H. Butler If this is true, why doesn t everyone make time for it? How is exercise like medicine?

Unit Design Know & Understand Define MVPA & RPE Define cardiorespiratory endurance Understand the basics how the respiratory & circulatory systems work together Understand and describe what it feels like to move at the different levels of the RPE chart Identify MVPA activities they enjoy in and out of school Identify health benefits of committing to 60 minutes of MVPA everyday

Unit Design Do Manage and read pedometers Move at a moderate to vigorous levels of intensity for increasingly longer periods of time Adjust intensity levels by using the RPE chart (individual challenges and MVPA games) to closely match individual MVPA to available activity time Create an original MVPA activity to enjoy with friends

Unit Design Formative Assessment Turn-to questions closure RPS - Review MVPA Pedometer Readings

Unit Design Summative Assessment End of unit knowledge quiz MVPA Challenge Day MVPA Group Game Design The scale I used is on the website.

Already Established Enter - Whiteboard Instructions (established routine) Dynamic Warm-Up (established routine) Connect (Memory Circle) Reflect - Turn-To Review - Talk & Draw (established routine)

Unit Visual Big Idea If exercise came in the form of a pill, It would be the most widely prescribed and beneficial medication in the nation. ~ Robert H. Butler If this is true, why doesn t everyone make time for it? How is exercise like medicine?

Thank You GOPHER for providing us with FITstep Pro pedometers to used during this session.

Instructions 1. Clip a pedometer on waistband in front of your hip & attach safety strap. 2. Set MVPA - Open Pedometer press blue mode button to MVPA. 3. Hold down Red Set button and it will blink 4 times then stop. Press this button again until it reads Mode to steps 5. Close pedometer and take 30 steps. Open is fine. Adjust?

MVPA Game Design Challenge Students could work alone or with others to create a game designed so that all participants could get high levels of MVPA We tested each game with pedometers Brainstormed modifications if needed

Rock Paper Scissors Review Great To Share With Classroom Teachers! Start On One Corner With Study Sheets RPS to see who asks first First person to miss a question stays and the other person runs to the next corner and plays again Challenged to keep moving at RPE - 3
