1 TRAINING OBJECTIVE Element of Competency: Apply First Aid Principles Learning Outcome Statement: Apply the First Aid Principles Apply first aid principles. a. anytime of day or night, and b. lecture room suitable for theory presentation. a. note book/pen; b. dress of the day; and c. Litepro. Trainees are given 1 x 40-Min period. Lesson is to be conducted by a qualified St John (or equivalent) First Aider. Attainment of this Training Objective is confirmed if the trainees can state in their own words: a. The definition of First Aid, b. The aims of First Aid, c. Priority of treatment, and d. The immediate action.

2 Teaching Points The following teaching points are to be covered: a. Definition of First Aid; b. Aims of First Aid; c. First Aid in the AO: (1) Self aid; (2) Buddy aid; (3) Medical aid (medic); and (4) initial wound surgery (HSB). d. IA for first aid (DRABC) e. order of priority for treatment of injuries; and f. general rules for First Aid

Data Projector/screen. Trainees are given 2 x 40-Min periods. Lesson is to be conducted at a minimum by a qualified St John (or equivalent) First Aider. Attainment of this Training Objective is confirmed if the trainees can correctly treat a. a minor cold injury, and b. heat illness. Teaching Points The following teaching points are to be covered: a. Overexposure to the cold, b. Hypothermia, c. Frostbite, d. Overexposure to heat, e. Heat cramps, f. Heat exhaustion, and g. Heat stroke.

Area suitable for theory presentation. a. Note book/pen; b. DOD; and c. Data Projector/screen. Trainees are given 1 x 40-min period. Lesson is to be conducted at a minimum by qualified St Johns (or equivalent) First Aider. Attainment of this Training Objective is confirmed if the trainees can explain in their own words the following: a. Definition of a poison; b. Different routes of entry a poison can take; and c. Treatment of ingested, absorbed, and inhalation poisons. Teaching Points The following teaching points are to be covered: a. Route of entry, b. Prevention, c. Signs and symptoms, and d. Treatment.

Attainment of this Training Objective is confirmed if the trainees can: a. Explain signs and symptoms of snake, Funnel Web and Redback Spider bites; and b. Apply PIM correctly. Teaching Points The following teaching points are to be covered: a. Signs and symptoms and treatment; (1) Insect stings, (2) Marine envenomation, (3) Box Jelly Fish, (4) Blue Ring Octopus, (5) Snake bite, (6) Spider bites, (7) Funnel Web, and (8) Redback. b. PIM
