1 MLAA Trade Test Outline The Practical Trade Test includes the following twelve exercises: 1. Automotive 2. Master Keying* 3. Safe Combination Locks 4. Lock Picking 5. Lockfitting Timber** 6. Lockfitting Aluminum** 7. Lever Locks 8. Impressioning Locks 9. Reading Locks 10. Door Hardware 11. Workshop 12. Roadwork * You must undertake one task in Exercise 2, Master Keying. ** You must undertake one task in either Exercise 5, Lockfitting Timber, or exercise 6, Lockfitting Aluminum, but should undertake one task in both exercises to maximise your mark. Achieving a Pass Each exercise has up to three tasks that are numbered one, two or three. You are only permitted to undertake one task in each exercise. Each task is worth a different mark with reflects the degree of difficulty of that task. Number 1 tasks are worth a maximum of 10 marks Number 2 tasks are worth a maximum of 7 marks Number 3 tasks are worth a maximum of 5 marks Before you commence the test you should read the Exercise sheets and discuss them with the Examiner who will assist you to select the necessary range of tasks to achieve the pass marks of 60 for General Locksmith or 80 for Master Locksmith. General Rules The nominal time for the Practical Trade Test is 6 hours which commences as soon as you start work. Once the test commences you are not permitted to take a break unless authorised to do so by the Examiner. You must not talk to another candidate during the test. You are not permitted to have a mobile telephone with you during the test. Tools and Equipment You must only use the locks, materials and key blanks provided. You are required to provide your own pinning kit for the master keying exercise. You may use your own tools including, for the lockfitting exercises, the power tools you use in the workplace. Duplicating and code machines may be used if specified by the task. If you opt to undertake Task 1 of Exercise 10 you may supply a laptop computer, portable printer, door scheduling software and additional catalogues.

2 Exercises Exercise 1. Automotive 1. Cut a key to a specified code to a Holden VT ignition lock. The cylinder must not appear to be damaged. A code machine may be 2. Master Keying 1. Load six 530 cylinders to the following keys: GGMK, GMKA, MKA1, MKA2, A1.1, A1.2, A2.1 and/or A2.2. Codes will be provided 2. Load a 530 cylinder to the following keys: GMK, MKA, A1 and A2. Codes will be provided Exercise 3. Safe Combination Locks 1. Identify, list then repair three faults in a Sargent & Greenleaf 6370 or similar safe combination lock then service it and reset the combination to Adjust and reset a Sargent & Greenleaf 6370 or similar safe combination lock with a customer error to Identify the customer error. 3. Identify the existing combination on a three wheel Sargent & Greenleaf 6370 or similar safe combination lock, write this combination then reset the combination to Exercise 4. Lock Picking 1. Pick a 5 pin 570 cylinder using hand picks, read and decode the cylinder and cut one key without disassembling the cylinder. Code machine may be used 2. Pick open a V7 padlock using hand picks. 3. Pick open a 5 pin 201 cylinder using hand picks

3 Exercise 5. Lockfitting Timber (YOU MUST UNDERTAKE ONE TASK FROM THIS EXERCISE OR EXERCISE 6 BUT SHOULD UNDERTAKE A TASK FROM BOTH TO MAXIMISE YOUR MARK). 1. Fit a Lockwood 3572 series or similar mortise lock 2. Fit a Lockwood 777 deadbolt. 3. Fit a Lockwood 001 or similar deadlatch Exercise 6. Lockfitting Aluminium (YOU MUST UNDERTAKE ONE TASK FROM THIS EXERCISE OR EXERCISE 6 BUT SHOULD UNDERTAKE A TASK FROM BOTH TO MAXIMISE YOUR MARK). 1. Fit a dummy electric strike to an aluminum box section using pre made fixing tabs. 2. Fit a Lockwood 3580 series mortise lock to an aluminum box section using pre made fixing tabs. 3. Fit a round edged strike to an aluminum box section using pre made fixing tabs. Exercise 7. Lever Locks (LOCKS MAY BE DISMANTLED) 1. Cut a key by hand to a Chubb 3G114 mortise lock. 2. Cut a key by hand to a Ross 600 series safe lock. 3. Cut a key by hand to a Ross 100 series safe lock. Exercise 8. Impressioning Locks (LOCKS MAY NOT BE DISMANTLED) 1. Impression a 6 pin 245 or similar padlock by hand 2. Impression a 5 pin 234 or similar padlock by hand. 3. Impression a 4 pin 232 padlock by hand.

Specify on a Hardware Sheet all locks and hardware for five doors in an aged care facility off the given floor plan. 2. Fit and adjust a Dorma TS83 or similar door closer. 3. Use a Handing Sheet to hand five doors off a given floor plan, using the English/Lockwood method. Exercise 11. Workshop 1. Reset the code on an Ilco Unican push button digital lock. 2. Identify and list common faults on three locks (Lane 3000 or similar mortise lock, 530 cylinder, generic cylindrical key in knob set) and their keys. 3. Read a worn 5 pin key and cut a key to code. Exercise 6B Using an answer form provided, the bitting charts produced when answering Exercise 6A and a given floor plan you are required to construct a master key system to certain specifications. * A laptop computer and software may be used to answer both Exercise 6A and Exercise 6B.
