3 Purpose of game/activity analysis The gathering of knowledge about : Movement Patterns and exercise intensity charts Energy system requirements Work to rest ratios Muscle groups involved Skill requirements Team strategies Opponents strengths and weaknesses Biomechanical technique. Key Fitness Components Information gathered can be used to : Determine performance objectives Set goals/team tactics etc. Structure training sessions to best meet the needs of the individual or the team. Inform and motivate both individual and/or team. NB: Team sports with intermittent activity lend themselves to detail analysis. Analysis of continuous activity such as distance running, cycling and swimming are limited to mainly the measurement of heart rates and intensity information. This is best achieved using electronic heart rate monitoring equipment referred to as Telemetry
4 Methods of Data Collection. Simple observation relies on the observation of individual or team from the sideline. Difficult to keep up with play and no supportive data. Subjective analysis. Observation with statistical data more useful, but can be limited due to inaccuracies in the recording and difficulty in keeping up with the play. (Very useful when immediate feedback is required such as a half time coaching address) Videotaping Use of video to gather statistics. Allows more accurate analysis as tape can be replayed as many times as necessary. Important that the player in question is in view at all times. (Use mainly for post game analysis and planning for future games and training.) Heart rate telemetry, accelerometers and other player tracking devices using GPS (Global Positioning Satellites) are also incorporated to give more accurate data on exercise intensity and movement patterns.
5 Types of Data collected Statistical analysis techniques. Analysis of a player s performance covers four key areas: 1. Skill analysis 2. Work rest ratios 3. Movement patterns & Intensity Charts 4. Muscle groups and muscle action. Each area provides valuable and specific information about the game and the player s participation.
6 Types of Data collected Skill actions/frequency. This relates to the number of skill actions such as serving, smashes, volleys etc. in tennis. This allows the identification of relevant fitness components, major muscle groups and how these relate to energy system usage. Skill analysis may provide information about: possessions offensive plays disposals defensive plays errors types of passes winners types of catches/mark goals shots played tackles successful plays shots for goal
7 Types of Data collected Movement Patterns. This involves recording the exact running movements of the player on movement pattern sheets (see below) during the analysis period and summarised in distances relevant to the sport. The intensity of these movements is also recorded. This information can be used to identify relevant fitness components and in particular the contribution of each of the energy systems to the performance. Movements are grouped as either : High sprints Medium cruise Low jog Rest walk/sitting/standing still. High & Medium: generally constitute anaerobic activity i.e. above 85% of H.R. max. Low: generally constitutes aerobic activity i.e between 70 85% of H.R. max Rest: generally represents aerobic usage also but is usually recognised as recovery time as the intensity is below 70% of H.R. max. This should always be kept in mind when making judgements on energy system usage from movement pattern analysis.

9 Types of Data collected Exercise Intensity Chart This intensity chart shows that in his first effort the player worked at moderate intensity for 5 sec. followed by a 15 sec. rest. His next effort involved 3 seconds of high intensity activity followed by a 2 sec. rest and so on Total work =150 sec Total rest = 290 This = W:R of 1:2 indicating significant aerobic system usage. Work to Rest analysis. This is achieved by using a stop watch to record the time spent active and the time spent resting. i.e.. If the subject worked for 5 min out of a 25 min analysis then he has rested for 20 therefore his work to rest ratio is 1 : 5 Work to rest ratios up to 1:1, 1:2 usually indicate the aerobic system as dominant. Work to rest ratios of 1: 3 usually indicate the lactic acid systems as dominant. Work to rest ratios of 1: 4 and above usually indicate the ATP /PC systems as dominant.

More costly, requires specific equipment and skills. Also incorporated to give more accurate data on exercise intensity and movement patterns.

12 Learning Activity 2.3 Need to select a particular player and obtain activity data based on this players performance. This can include: Skills performed (eg possession and disposal skills, etc) Movement patterns and intensities Work to rest ratio data Muscle groups and muscle actions
13 Learning Activity 2.3 As a minimum you must collect data for movement patterns and intensities as well as work to rest ratio. Data collection tables / charts suitable for tennis will need to be drawn up and prepared beforehand (use pg. 170 & 171 of live it up as a guide for movement patterns)
14 Learning Activity 2.3 Work / rest rest is classified as standing still, walking and slow jogging everything else if work. To record use two stop watches all work efforts on one and all rest periods on another.
