This month, we also offer a workshop designed to help you sleep better, a workshop to help you improve the comfort of your knees and ankles, a workshop to enhance your sense of self, and a workshop exploring challenging but valuable Feldenkrais lessons. 3 Improve Your Sleep Organizing your nervous system for a good night s rest Pain-Free Knees & Ankles Increasing your flexibility, support and comfort with Nancy Judson Tuesday, July 7 6:30-9:30 pm You may have noticed that the Feldenkrais Method helps you to sleep better. Here s why: Feldenkrais exercises work to restore the balance between tension and relaxation in your brain and body. They help us to return to the healthful relaxed neurological state in which we are able to rest and breathe freely, as opposed to the tense, anxiety-provoking neurological state often referred to as flight or fight. This workshop with Nancy Judson features a collection of Feldenkrais exercises that are particularly effective in promoting a sound, restorative and comfortable night s sleep. They will help you to fall asleep more easily and quickly, and also to return to sleep if you awaken during the night. Knowing how to switch from tension and stress to a calm, relaxed state can help you in many ways. In addition to helping you sleep (and snore less), these Feldenkrais lessons may come in handy during the day too, helping to reduce pain in many parts of your body, and giving you a sense of calm before and after stressful events. with Marek Wyszynski Tuesday, July 21 6:30-9:30 pm It is important to have healthy, comfortable, well-functioning knees and ankles because considerable pressure or force is transmitted through them every moment you are upright. If your ankles and knee are well organized in relation to the rest of your body, this type of pressure is absorbed easily. But if your ankles and knees are poorly organized, shearing forces may cause damage and inflammation, exacerbate symptoms of arthritis, and make you more vulnerable to a range of orthopedic problems including osteoarthritis, torn menisci, patellofemoral pain, ligament strains, fallen arches and sprained ankles. This smart summer workshop with Feldenkrais Institute co-founder Marek Wyszynski is designed to help you to restore the strength, flexibility, and dependability of your knees and ankles, and to help to prevent damage from occurring in the future. Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement can help to improve your performance in any kind of fitness endeavor.

4 LEARN SOMETHING NEW Every time you do a Feldenkrais lesson your nervous system engages in a sophisticated form of sensory-motor learning. As a result, improvements become possible in your posture, comfort, ease of movement, and sense of self. The Feldenkrais lesson clarifies, enhances, and updates the map of neural connections in your brain. New pathways begin to develop and new options become available. While doing an Awareness Through Movement lesson, consider these four principles: (from chapter five of The Brains Way of Healing, by Norman Doidge MD., 2015) > Even the smallest movement in one part of the body involves the entire body. > Differentiation making the smallest possible sensory distinctions between movements builds brain maps. > Differentiation is easiest to make when the stimulus is smallest. > Slowness of movement is the key to awareness, and awareness is the key to learning. After the lesson... GOOD TO KEEP IN MIND To support the improvements that have taken place in your brain and body, pay attention to your experience. Notice everything: changes in your body and also in the way you move, think, and interact with the world. Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day. Observe yourself in a relaxed non-critical way, and observe how you feel. Taking time to notice differences after doing a Feldenkrais lesson is a powerful part of the equation; it will potentiate and help to integrate the new learning into your daily activities! Improving Your Sense of Self Experience the Feldenkrais difference You have the power to help yourself, to improve yourself, to learn more, to become more, and this power never leaves you. All you have to do is invest some time, let go of some old ideas and embrace the possibility of change. Mark Hirschfield with Mark Hirschfield Thursday, July 23 6:30-9:30 pm This workshop is for everyone who wants to know themselves better. Each of us has an internal map or image of our physical self. Typically, the map is clear and accurate in some parts of the body, but vague or even distorted in others. Dr. Feldenkrais created some special Awareness Through Movement lessons that use movement, attention and imagination to help us to clarify and develop our internal map. These lessons can be immensely helpful. As your kinesthetic awareness and body image grows, you will begin to know yourself in a richer, fuller way. You will feel that you are more than you previously realized, and your energy level and emotional outlook may improve, too. The Feldenkrais Method views each person as a fully integrated whole with infinite potential for growth and improvement. 5 Advanced Awareness Through Movement An evening of valuable, challenging lessons Although the Feldenkrais Method is known as a way to help people heal, reduce pain, and regain function, it is equally beneficial for people who do not have physical difficulties. Some require sophisticated balancing, powerful movements, and unusual or challenging positions. This workshop features a collection of these advanced lessons. They can enhance athletic ability, and help you to become stronger, more powerful, and more graceful. NOTE: If you suffer from chronic pain or are recovering from an injury, we do not recommend this workshop. However, if you enjoy Awareness Through Movement and do not have serious physical limitation, please join us! Joshua Wolk is a Feldenkrais teacher and a life-long practitioner of martial arts. For over two decades, he has used the Feldenkrais Method to help his students improve their performance. Announcing a new Feldenkrais Method Professional Training Program with David Zemach-Bersin Beginning Summer/Fall 2015 in New York City A new Feldenkrais Training Program is beginning at the Feldenkrais Institute on August 24th, directed by David Zemach-Bersin. David studied with Dr. Feldenkrais for over ten years, as one of Dr. Feldenkrais first American students. If you are interested in human learning and healing, and want to learn how to use neuroplasticity to improve the body, this program may be a fascinating opportunity for you. 6 The Feldenkrais Method for Musicians A two-day workshop with guest teacher Uri Vardi This workshop is open to musicians of all kinds. It is also open to Feldenkrais Practitioners and Feldenkrais training program students who are interested in working with musicians. August Saturday: 10:00 am 5:00 pm and Sunday: 10:00 am 4:00 pm Uri Vardi understands that two instruments are engaged when music is played. One instrument is the musician s cello, piano, flute or other choice. The other instrument is the musician s own finely tuned body and mind. As a world class musician and teacher for 40 years, Mr. Vardi has observed that when these two instruments interact harmoniously, dramatic improvements in our expression, sound, comfort and skill, can take place.
