If you did well, we re happy you know about our programs! If not, we re here to share information. Did you know there are new SOLs for Health and Physical Education? Do your kids ask you about food labels, or better yet, do they explain them to you?! Have you heard of WELNET? Have your children mentioned what they re learning in HPE at home?
Health Education 2015 Health SOLs include: Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to make healthy decisions that reduce health risks and enhance the health of self and others. (Essential Health Concepts) Demonstrate the ability to access, evaluate, and use health information, products, and services that influence health and wellness in a positive manner. (Healthy Decisions) Demonstrate the use of appropriate health practices and behaviors to promote a safe and healthy community when alone, with family, at school, and in other group settings. (Advocacy and Health Promotion)
Did you know many activities in Health & PE involve the use of nutrition cards?
Health & Fitness Fair at Harper Park MS Students made healthy snacks and smoothies! HPE Department set up stations for students to learn about and experience creating their own healthy snacks.
Principal Beth Robinson and Harper Park students enjoyed the health and fitness fair!
Rethink Your Drink is promoted at all LCPS schools!
The LCPS Physical Education Model Elementary: Movement Skills Middle: Exposure to a variety of activities High: Specialize in self-selected lifetime activities
Physical Education SOLs were revised in 2015! Demonstrate competence in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. (Motor Skill Development) Apply knowledge of the structures and functions of the body and how they relate to and are affected by human movement to learning and developing motor skills and specialized movement forms. (Anatomical Basis of Movement) Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of personal fitness. (Fitness Planning) Demonstrate the aptitude, attitude, and skills to lead responsible, fulfilling, and respectful lives. (Social Development) Explain the importance of energy balance and nutritional needs of the body to maintain optimal health and prevent chronic disease. (Energy Balance)
Virginia Wellness-Related Fitness Testing Program Skills are practiced regularly using games of fitness as well as the actual subtests Many schools reserve Fridays as PACER day to improve aerobic fitness levels among students Walking and running clubs using tokens and pedometers have gained popularity among students and staff and are highly motivational for everyone involved
WELNET reports provide information to students and parents!
Elementary Physical Education The elementary physical education curriculum is based upon movement experiences that are taught sequentially as activities and games Competition is not emphasized at this level Small-sided games (4-on-4 or 5-on-5) help students engage in physical activity longer, and help them practice skills needed in later grades One to the World Opportunities are provided

Games Unit at Mountain View ES
Cup stacking and fitness training at Potowmack ES and peddling while reading at Ashburn ES!
Partner Games and Dance at Ashburn ES
Middle School Physical Education The emphasis at the middle schools is on teaching students a wide range of activities over short intervals of time (each activity should last about 3 weeks). The movement skills learned in elementary school can now be applied to game situations and recreational activities. This provides the opportunity for students to prepare for selfselecting lifetime activities that appeal to them in high school. OTTW activities are incorporated into HPE curriculum.
6.5 The student will explain the connection between energy balance and nutrition guidelines, meal planning, and exercise intensity. a) Create a one-day meal and snack plan based on Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA), portions, macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, hydration, sugar, and salt.
The Shoe Project at Seneca Ridge Students traced their sneakers and wrote fitness goals for the year on them. The shoes literally walked the hallways!
Eagle Ridge Middle School students play Kan Jam
Badminton and outdoor games at Harper Park
High School Physical Education Student Choice: Students may select a different activity each quarter, and are given a menu of activities to choose from. Teachers may specialize in a particular activity and potentially teach the same activity every quarter by rotating students. Teachers may also team teach and offer different activities per quarter. OTTW opportunities are incorporated into the HPE curriculum.

What have we done to help improve the health of students in Loudoun? LCPS has adopted a standards-based HPE curriculum Equipment was purchased for every school with a federal PE Program (PEP) Grant ($1.4 million) LCPS meets the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity for all students, as recommended in HB 242 LCPS has been awarded a Safe Routes to School Educational Grant for 3 consecutive years
Adapted Physical Education Adapted PE services are provided to students with disabilities who qualify for specially designed instruction. Adapted PE has the same objectives as general physical education (GPE) programs, but adjustments are made in the general curriculum to meet the needs and abilities of students with disabilities The role of the adapted physical education (APE) teacher is to provide direct instruction to individuals or small groups of students who have adapted physical education specified in their current IEP.
Adapted PE Content Teaching Academy at JMU
Health and Nutrition MyPlate activities Building a healthy plate Understanding the 5 food groups Color coding 5 Components of Fitness Muscle vs. fat Heart rate/pedometers Cooking labs with switches Determining healthy habits Cooking healthy meals
