Do you want motivated middle school students? Give them a choice! Presented by: Anna Ziccardi, Physical Educator Christina Rudnicki, School Counselor Edison Middle School (7th & 8th) Massillon Perry Local Schools "Jump into your passion with both feet and bring other along with you" -Vince Lombardi

What problems do you have in your physical education classes that prevent maximum level of participation?

Edison Middle School Approximately 800 students One semester of PE a year, every day 52 minute class period Choose between Sports Education or Fitness for Life in both 7th and 8th grade year 3 physical education teachers, 2 full time and 1 splits time with health

Why 2 different course To give the non-athletic and/or competitive student a chance to be successful Create a safe and none intimating environment for all students

How did we get there? District PE staff was redoing the course of study before the standards came out. We analyzed what units we taught at the middle and high school level. We needed to come up with a way to maximize student participation.

What did it take to get there? Created course descriptions Educate staff: administrators, school counsellors, and staff that may be involved in help choosing ( special education teachers ) Educate parents and students by video and course descriptions in student course bulletin and school website.

Fitness for Life This course is meant for students that want to participate in a non-team sport related physical education class that emphasizes individual improvement on fitness and lifetime sport activities. This course provides students an opportunity to develop their physical, mental, emotional and social domains while learning what it takes to improve their overall fitness level and to live a healthy lifestyle in a non-competitive atmosphere.

Fitness for Life Classroom

Fitness for life Classes Circuit stations Walking track Exercise balls Abs class Stretching/meditation Jump rope stations Ultimate Fitness games Stadium

Fitness for Life Instead of doing several days in a row of one unit when this class separates from sports we rotate the classes daily. Example: Monday- walking track, Tuesday- circuit class, Wednesday- stretch class, Thursday- exercise ball activity, Friday- step class

Sports Education This course is meant for students that want to participate in a competitive team and lifetime sport related activities while improving their overall level of fitness. This course provides students an opportunity to develop their physical, mental, emotional and social domains while learning what it takes to improve their overall fitness level and to live a healthy lifestyle in a competitive atmosphere.

Sports Education Units Floor hockey Basketball Soccer Softball/whiffle ball Ultimate Mat ball Volleyball Basketball Flag football Badminton

Both classes Fitness assessments Fitness games Cornhole Bocce Archery Bowling Hantis Ultimate Walking track Acrosport

Basic fitness knowledge 5 components of physical fitness F.I.T.T. principle Resting heart rate Max heart rate Exercise zone Average blood pressure BMI- body mass index

SLO goals All students will be assessed, but we report 7th grade only Performance base: every student will be pre-assessed the first week on sit-ups, push-ups, pacer, sit-n-reach Knowledge base: every student will take a pre-test on their understanding of fitness related information. Both the performance and knowledge base will be have a posted assessment. The application of each goal will be presented differently in each class, but in the end the goal is for each student to walk away with improvement in both.

Give them a choice and your students will... Take ownership because they got to say where they want to be Feel safe Reduce visits to counsellors because of problems in PE Give you their best effort because they are participating with peers at their level Gain confidence Limit excuses to not participate Have fun!!!!
