1 Los Angeles Valley College Department of Kinesiology Kin Aerobic Super Circuit Instructor: Sandra Perry Location: South Gym room 200 Office: South Gym 5 Day: T/TH 11:20-12:45 Office Hours: By Appointment Course Description: In this level 2 class the student will progress from their introductory level to a beginning level in this group circuit training class. This will involve the student increasing their intensity and duration with additional stations added to their rotation in their fitness program. This progression will further enhance the student's adaptation in their cardiovascular and muscular development. Fitness assessments will be used to measure student's progress and to modify student's fitness goals. This aerobic super circuit class (aka: fitness center class) is one of our most popular activity classes and a beneficial class for weight management. Course Objectives: 1. Design, implement and evaluate individualized exercise program based on health history, physical fitness assessments and fitness goals in comparison to their level 1 introductory baseline level. Increase in workout is an outcome measurement of this level 2 course. 2. Students will demonstrate correct form and technique on cardiovascular and weight training machines and increase their number of rotations in the circuit in this level 2 class compared to their level 1 performance. An activity meter will be used to chart the student s progression from their level 1 baseline performance. 3. Apply and recognize the concepts of teamwork, cooperation, communication and respect for each other. 4. Differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic exercise and assess the value of both. 5. Students will perform increases in their work output by demonstrating longer duration exercises and increases in intensity. Students will also demonstrate a slower more controlled movement of all of their exercises performed at each station. 6. Perform, record, and interpret assessment scores of cardiovascular fitness assessment using the step test, blood pressure, and resting pulse rate and chart the progression from level Determine the student's THR (target heart rate) changes from their baseline level 1 introduction to the fitness center. 8. Demonstrate of improved form, alignment, and execution of exercises at stations from the student's level 1 baseline performance.

2 9. The student will perform increases in their cardiovascular capacity by sustaining longer bouts on the cardiovascular equipment of their choice. Increases should be seen from the student's level 1 baseline performance. 10. The student will demonstrate additional stretches in this level 2 class to show their progression in their skill and capacity in their physiology to perform more skills from their level 1 introductory course. Course Level Student Leaning Outcome: Upon successfully completing this course: 1. Students will perform the post step test skill demonstration to show their cardiovascular improvement from their level 1 baseline measurement. 2. Students will also demonstrate an increase in their overall rotation through the circuit from their level 1 baseline introductory level. Assessment Measurement: 1. Faculty members will demonstrate and evaluate the post step test with the students and instructors will chart the student s increase in their rotation in the circuits. Grading: Students grade will be based on five components; 1.) Hours 2.) Completion of circuits 3.) One final exam 4.) Post step- test, push-ups, curl ups, and sit and reach. 5.) Check in meeting. 3 Percentages Total Points A 90%-100% B 80%-89% C 70%-79% D 60%-69% F <59% Policies and Procedures: Enrollment: Fitness Center participants must be enrolled in the fitness center class. Everyone must complete the necessary paperwork, Assessments and must complete orientation for instructions on how to use the equipment properly. New students to the fitness center must enroll and attend the first 2 weeks of their schedule orientation time. Failure to complete your orientation can result in being dropped from the class. Check in: Student will be required to meet with your scheduled instructor once during the fifthseventh week for a check-in meeting worth 25 point. They will have two options to meet with their scheduled instructor. 1.) A face to face meeting. 2.) Via . The check in is a brief meeting to see the student s progression in the course. The instructor has the right to exclude their student if he or she is not meeting the course requirements. Attire: Appropriate workout attire must be worn while working out. Appropriate workout attire includes athletic pants or shorts, athletic shoes (tennis or aerobic shoes), Athletic shirt or tank top. You will be asked to change if you are not in appropriate workout attire. Cell Phone: Cell phones may be used only for music purposes. If you are using your cell phone for any other reason other than music you will be asked to step outside and may lose workout time. Workout card and Picture I.D: Students must carry and have visible their workout card at all times while using the fitness center this is for your safety. Students must have their student I.D. card to log into the computer before every workout session. If a student needs to use the restroom he or she must leave your I.D. card with the instructor or attendant on duty. Failure to do so may result in loss of workout time. Towels: Every student is required to bring a towel to workout. The purpose of the towel is to help keep a safe and clean environment. The size of the towel should be shoulder width. It will serve as a barrier between your skin and the machines. Please do not bring rags or wash cloths as this defeats the purpose of the towel.

4 Lockers: Women may use the south gym women s locker room for lockers and showers, this is on a daily basis. Men may use the men s locker room in the south gym. You must provide your own lock and remove your lock and items daily. No overnight lockers. Courtesy Policies: There is a 20-minute limit on all non-circuit cardiovascular equipment. To use equipment: 1.) Print your name legibly on the waiting list and you will be called when it is your turn. 2.) When your name is called, enter your start time and cross out your name and time before you begin. 3.) As you leave the cardio equipment, call out the name of the next person who signed. Super Circuit: The blue and red machines are for super circuit use only. Do not attempt to weight train or warm up in the super circuit areas at ANY time. There is NO skipping allowed in the circuits. If a student needs modification, please speak to instructor. Participation Record: Log/in and log/out on the computer or you will not get credit for a session. The minimum time for a session is 20 minutes the maximum time awarded for section session is 90 minutes. You can only log in and log out on the computer two times a day. Your second session must be three hours after your first log out. If you forget to log/in or log/out properly you will be awarded 1 minute. Financial Aid is available!
