COUNTRY REPORT ON MAP GENETIC RESOURCES SLOVENIA (ULBF, IHPS). Prof. dr. Dea Baricevic, University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty Msc.ag. Natasa Ferant, IHPS Žalec BRAGA, April 27th 2017
Monitoring and inventory of plant species for food and agriculture began in the 50s and 60s of the last century primarily for the purpose of breeding. Since 1996, plant genetic resources in Slovenia systematically collected, stored and maintained within the framework of the Slovenian plant gene bank (SPGB). Institutions involved: Agricultural Institute of Slovenia collection: 3220 accessions (Vegetables: 1466, Forage crops: 1033, Potato: 44, Cereals: 108, Small fruit: 169, Grape vine: 90, Fruit trees: 310); University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty (ULBF) collection: 1631 accessions (Cereals: 471, Maize: 614, Forage crops: 228, Fruit trees: 173, Medicinal and aromatic plants: 145); Institute of Hops research and Brewery of Slovenia (IHPS) collection: 262 accessions (Hops: 178, Medicinal and aromatic plants: 84 (97); University of Maribor, Faculty for Agriculture and Life Sciences (FKBV): 327 accessions (Fruit trees: 197, Grape vine: 130).
Ministry of agriculture, forestry and food of Slovenia: program of Slovene Plant Genebank (SPGB), a part of which MAP Genebank (from 1996 on). Curators (ULBF, IHPS) reponsible for study, characterization and evaluation of natural habitats and autochthonous MAP populations, using ECPGR descriptors (Environment and site, Crop specific descriptors ), multiplication of accessions, conservation in situ, ex situ and in vitro, data input in SPGB information system (IS) (from 2009 on).
Autochtonous populations of MAPs under inspection/control (in situ) on 51 natural habitats Phytocoenologically and edaphically evaluated 51 natural habitats 85 plant species, 244 MAP genetic resources (147 ULBF, 97 IHPS) medium term conserved (ex situ seeds in cold room/ refrigerator, plantation, in vitro - 5 accessions, in situ).
55 MAP populations: characterized/evaluated either from morphological, chemical, use, agronomic or (rarely) molecular aspect
Multiplication of existing accessions (short- term germinability and crosspollination of majority MAPs): in obtaining seed material of authentic population an isolation and controled pollination needed).
