11 ISSN Volume 36 Number 3-6 May December 2016 India, WHO ink pact to promote AYUSH The Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), Government of India, and the World Health Organization (WHO) signed a historic project collaboration agreement (PCA) for cooperation on promoting quality, safety and effectiveness of AYUSH services on 13 May in Geneva. The PCA was signed by the Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH Shri Ajit M. Sharan and Assistant Director General, Health Systems and Innovations, WHO Dr. Marie Kieny. Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Hon ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH and Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General, WHO witnessed the signing of the landmark agreement at the WHO headquarters. The PCA titled as Cooperation on promoting the quality, safety and effectiveness of service provision in traditional and complementary medicine between WHO and AYUSH, India, aims to support WHO in the development and implementation of the WHO Traditional and Complementary Medicine Strategy: and will contribute to the global promotion of traditional Indian systems of medicine. The PCA for the period will deliver for the first time WHO benchmark document for training in Yoga, and WHO benchmarks for practice in Ayurveda, Unani and Panchakarma. These will contribute significantly to the strengthening of national capacities in ensuring the quality, safety and effectiveness of traditional medicine as well as establishing regulatory frameworks for traditional medicine products and practice and promote their integration in the national healthcare system. Speaking at the reception hosted by India on this occasion, the AYUSH minister recalled the long history and rich heritage of traditional medicine in India and its growing relevance in providing holistic and comprehensive healthcare. He reiterated the high priority attached by the Govt. of India for the promotion of traditional medicine both in India and abroad and highlighted the numerous initiatives undertaken to functionally integrate AYUSH in India s national health programmes and for achieving Universal Health Coverage. The minister also mentioned that the initiatives and activities undertaken by India within the country align with the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy He added that India, in fact, sets a unique example for adopting a pluralistic healthcare delivery system that allows every recognized medical system to develop and be practiced with a view to provide integrated and holistic healthcare services. The PCA with WHO is a further recognition of India s rich experience in the development and governance of traditional medicine. It will pave the way for India s long-term collaboration with the WHO in fostering the global promotion and integration of AYUSH systems of medicine including through the inclusion of Ayurveda and Unani in the International Classification of Diseases and the International Classification of Health Interventions. 13 Project for integration of Unani Medicine in NPCDCS launched The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) under the aegis of Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India launched a pilot project for integration of Unani Medicine in National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases & Stroke (NPCDCS) at Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh on 1 June. Speaking on the objective of the project, he said that the project aims to supplement NPCDCS in preservation and promotion of health and prevention and management of lifestyle diseases in the district. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shiv Pratap Yadav, Minister of State (Medical and Health), Uttar Pradesh said that according to WHO estimation, NCDs accounted for 5.9 million deaths (60% of total deaths) in the country in 2012 and therefore there is a need to use the potentials of Unani Medicine and other Indian systems of medicine to combat them. The integration of Unani Medicine in NPCDCS, which was launched in 2010 by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, has been initiated to exploit potentials of Indian traditional systems of medicine and their unique and time-tested therapies engaging Ministry of AYUSH in the implementation of the programme. The CCRUM would extend its services and resources to the programme through its Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Lucknow at 17 Community Health Centres (CHCs), 54 Primary Health Centres (PHCs), District Hospital and NPCDCS Cell at district headquarters of Lakhimpur Kheri. On this occasion, a training manual on Integration of Unani Medicine in NPCDCS was also released. 14 Participation in workshop on e-granthalaya The CCRUM s library staff participated in a three day workshop on e-granthalaya, the integrated library management software of National Informatics Centre (NIC), during September at New Delhi. Participation in MTNL Perfect Health Mela 2016 The CCRUM participated in MTNL Perfect Health Mela 2016, a comprehensive health fair organized here in New Delhi during October by Heart Care Foundation of India and New Delhi Municipal Council. The fair aimed at creating awareness about all aspects of health incorporating all pathies under one roof. Since its inception in 1993, this mega community service event, which presents a mix of traditional and modern healthcare, has been a timetested mass health awareness module that attracts 3-5 lakh visitors every year. The event was inaugurated by Shri Satyender Jain, Hon ble Health Minister, Government of NCT of Delhi. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Yogesh Singh, Director, NSIT in the presence of Dr. S. Thakur, Head, Library Services, NSIT; Shri Prabhat Kumar Choudhary, Assistant Librarian, NSIT; Dr. R. K. Matoria, Technical Director, NIC; and Shri G. L. Meena, Registrar, NSIT. The workshop had theoretical and practical sessions on introduction, administrative, acquisition, catalogue, circulation, serials and articles modules of the software. The meeting began with welcome remarks by Prof. Rais-ur- Rahman, Director General, CCRUM who gave a brief introduction of the Council s objectives and achievements to the members of the recently reconstituted SAC. Dr. Khalid M. Siddiqui, Deputy Director General, CCRUM made a presentation on the history of the Council and briefed the agenda items. The SAC considered the annual action plan for the year and recommended the proposed projects. The committee also considered 20 protocols for clinical validation of various Unani pharmacopoeial drugs and recommended them with the suggestion that the validation of Jawarish Mastagi in Nafakh-i Shikam should be dropped and Habb-i Raal should be validated in cases of Ishal rather than Quruh-i Isna Ashari. The SAC also considered the IMR projects received from different research centres of the Council and advised to shortlist them and place before a committee of experts for their evaluation. The committee also considered and recommended the proposal for translation of Persian book Iksir-i Azam into Urdu language through outsourcing. Other recommendations of the committee included establishment pharmacognosy laboratories of RRIUM, Aligarh; and conversion of certain sanctioned posts from one discipline to other discipline. The meeting was chaired by Dr. MA Waheed, Chairman, SAC and attended by its members Dr. Yasmeen Shamsi, Prof. Imamuddin, Prof. Mushtaque Ahmad, Prof. S. 16 CCRUM organises Hindi Pakhwara The CCRUM organised Hindi Pakhwara at its headquarters in New Delhi and different institutes in the country with a view to motivating the employees to create an environment for implementation of the Official Language Policy in day-to-day work. The Pakhwara at the headquarters was celebrated during 8 22 September which included organization of various competitions and section-wise review of Hindi work done in different sections. Inaugurating the Pakhwara on 08 September, Prof. Rais-ur- Rahman, Director General (I/C), CCRUM said that it is the duty of every employee of the Council to use Hindi in day-to-day official work and participate enthusiastically in various competitions of Hindi Pakhwara. During the Hindi Pakhwara, the Council organised Hindi Dictation, Hindi Translation, Hindi Note Writing, Hindi Debate, Hindi Poetry and Hindi Essay Writing Competitions at its headquarters and the winners were awarded various prizes. The Hindi Pakhwara was also celebrated in various Officials of the CCRUM's Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Lucknow taking part in a competition organized during Hindi Pakhwara. Training programme on DSpace The CCRUM participated in a five day training programme on design and development of institutional repositories using DSpace software during 1 5 August 2016 at CSIR National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (CSIR-NISCAIR), New Delhi. The training programme, which was inaugurated by the Director of NISCAIR, had various sessions for theory and hands-on institutes/centres under the Council which includes Central Research Institutes of Unani Medicine (CRIUMs), Hyderabad and Lucknow; Regional Research Institutes of Unani Medicine (RRIUMs), New Delhi, Aligarh, Bhadrak, Mumbai, Patna, Chennai, Kolkata and Srinagar; Hakim Ajmal Khan Institute of Literary and Historical Research in Unani Medicine, New Delhi; Drug Standardisation Research Institute (DSRI), Ghaziabad; Regional Research Centre (RRC), Allahabad; and Clinical Research Units (CRUs), Burhanpur, Meerut, etc. to promote Hindi in official work. 17 Ethnobotanical survey in Namakkal Forest Division The Council s researchers from its Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Chennai conducted an ethno-botanical survey in Namakkal Forest Division of Namakkal district in Tamil Nadu during 27 January 10 February The survey aimed to explore general vegetation pattern and availability of medicinal plants in general and those used in Unani Medicine in particular. Recording of folklore claims about medicinal uses of plants was also among the objectives of the study. Researchers from CCRUM s Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Chennai interacting with the locals to record folk claims about medicinal plants. Mallotus philippinensis (Lam.) Muell.-Arg. (Kamila) Namakkal district is located between and North latitude and and East longitude. The Namakkal Forest Division consists of four forest ranges namely Namakkal, Rasipuram, Kollimalai and Mullukurichi. Kollimalai is a small mountain range located in the southeastern part of Namakkal district. It is a part of Eastern Ghats of South India. It covers quite narrow hill slopes and deep valleys. The average annual rainfall is about 1200mm and the temperature varies between 100 and 350 C. The vegetation of Kollimalai is predominantly dry deciduous, evergreen, shoals, and scrub jungles. The other forest ranges are mostly covered with deciduous and scrub jungles vegetation. The Kollimalai is mainly occupied by the Malayalis tribal community. The main occupation in the district is agriculture. The cultivation generally depends on monsoon rains, wells and river water. Nearly 90 percent of the cultivated area is under food crops. The principal cereal crops of this district are paddy and different varieties of millets. Among pulses, the major crops are red gram, black gram, green gram and horse gram. Among oil seeds, groundnut, castor and sesame occupy important place under cultivation. Other important commercial crops include sugarcane, cotton and tapioca which are cultivated in many parts of Kollimali Taluk of the district. (Senthuram) for scabies; Leaf The CCRUM participated in BRICS Trade Fair 2016 organised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India during October 2016 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Themed on Building BRICS - Innovation for Collaboration, the fair focused on showcasing some of the best technologies available across BRICS nations to address their development challenges. Murugeswaran, Research Officer (Botany) and consisted of Hakim Noman Anwar, Research Officer (Unani); Dr. K. Venkatesan, Research Assistant (Botany); Shri Mazhar Ali, Field Attendant and Shri Mohammed Hussain, Driver of the Institute. Aminuddin with inputs from R. Murugeswaran The fair that was inaugurated by Shri Hamid Ansari, Hon ble Vice President of India in the presence of various ministers from the participating nations also aimed to highlight several other sectors of interest to the BRICS and tried to bring together young entrepreneurs. The CCRUM and other research councils and institutes of the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India participated in the fair and showcased their achievements in research and educational activities. The CCRUM s stall attracted about 1000 visitors and provided them with free literature on the principles of healthy living and achievements of the Council in the area of research in Unani Medicine.
