1 Weekly Newsletter January 4, 2019 Sanford Center Sanford Center works with local Breastfeeding Coalition on Becoming Breastfeeding Friendly The local breastfeeding coalition advocates for the health of mothers, babies and families through breastfeeding and works to promote and improve breastfeeding in the community. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding is the standard for infant feeding. It provides essential nutrients and antibodies that boost an infant s immune system, providing protection from childhood illnesses. Babies who are not breastfed are more likely to develop common childhood illnesses like ear infections and diarrhea as well as chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, asthma and childhood obesity. Breastfeeding helps children get off to a healthy start, says Sheila Johnson, local breastfeeding coalition leader and Beltrami County Public Health Breastfeeding Coordinator. Businesses and organizations in Beltrami County play an essential role in supporting moms who are breastfeeding. I encourage other businesses in Beltrami County to follow the Sanford Center s lead and put forth effort in becoming breastfeeding friendly. Thanks to the efforts by Sanford Center leadership, barriers to breastfeeding can be overcome. Breastfeeding is made easier for mothers by providing a clean, private, non-bathroom space to pump breast milk or feed baby, Johnson said. The Sanford Center has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting breastfeeding by creating a space designated for women to breastfeed during events at the Sanford Center including hockey games, concerts and trade shows. Tiffany Vickaryous-Hubbard, Associate Executive Director of the Sanford Center, states This is a new year with new beginnings and it is important to us to have a warm desirable space that will accommodate both mother and baby. It is exciting for me, as a mother, employee and community member to provide this new space for all nursing mothers no matter what great event it is that brings them here. By making breastfeeding easier, mothers can reach their goals and give their babies the best possible start in life. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recognizes those who take steps to provide accommodations and support for women who would like to breastfeed or continue to breastfeed after returning to work or school.
