1 SUSTAINABILITY OF A BREASTFEEDING COALITION OR HOW TO PROMOTE BREASTFEEDING FOR FUN AND PROFIT DISCLOSURE My only relative financial relationship to the discussion today is my private practice, Breastfeeding Fixers, in which I assess problems with breastfeeeding release tongue and upper lip ties. It All Began With a Spark Frustration with the lack of breastfeeding knowledge in the medical community Little to no breastfeeding education in most medical schools Not enough Lactation Consultants to meet the needs of the community Many moms suffering from trauma to the breasts Some infants failing to thrive On returning from a breastfeeding conference in 1994, Mary Sammer, MS RD, took this to heart and contacted colleagues to organize to do something about it 2

3 The Spark Quickly Became an Ember then a Flame Representatives from most San Diego Hospitals, WIC and DHS joined the group Mary Sammer & JoAnn Shaw & Neonatologist Nancy Wight, MD, led the organizing group Healthy People 2000 was selected as the Goal Target selected: Physicians and Breastfeeding as a Healthcare Issue 3 Committees were established: Resource Guide Committee Community Outreach Committee Physician Outreach Committee So What About Funding? A. Membership The more members you have The more sources of income are possible: Donations, Links to Grants, Project Participation The more ideas you have from a diverse group of Professionals and Interested Friends And, of course, Membership Fees How to attract members to your group Have a recruitment table at medical conferences and community events Invite colleagues to a coalition event or meeting to see you in action, perhaps to volunteer Ask to address your staff or department at monthly meetings to report on what you do Speak to a colleague you think may be willing to support breastfeeding activities Use World Breastfeeding Week to have a Grand Rounds &/or Display on a breastfeeding subject 3

13 Continuing Education and Updated Resource Guides Grants Mana From Heaven In 2000, Proposition 10 Funds Became Available Dr Nancy Wight wrote a grant proposal to ask for some of these funds. We were given a grant for $100,000 for which we were to Hold a major medical meeting once a year for 2 years Provide 40 medical office staffs with training to support breastfeeding Provide 40 Child Care Center Staffs with training to support breastfeeding With this seed money we were able to Produce a major breastfeeding education meeting in both 2000, 2001 and 2002 Provide the required trainings to both medical office and child care staffs Hire a Coalition Executive Director to oversee these activities and put together the required report to the funder stating how the funds were used. 13

19 Funding Strategies Are As Diverse As Your Membership Hold a Mini-Seminar using local volunteer talent and a No-Cost Venue Hold a major meeting with invited Big Name speakers if you have the seed money Make the syllabus from any meeting available for a fee to those who could not attend. Webinars are the cheaper and shorter version of a medical meeting, still profitable If the speaker agrees, make a recording of the presentation available for a fee later on Produce useful local products: CD-ROM, specialized Note Cards or Thank You Cards with your logo or photo you own to make it unique. Bumper Snickers are popular. Hold a partnership dinner at a popular restaurant chain where you get 15-20% of what you members & friends spend on dinner there on a designated night List of SDCBC Accomplishments Without Prop 10 Funds 19

20 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Breastfeeding in the Workplace Awards get large, medium and small business thinking about have a breastfeeding policy, a place where a mom can nurse her baby, etc. Schools and cities also compete to achieve this award Scholarships offer to partially pay for a CLE or IBCLC training course to individuals in your area who would like to pursue this career but have limited funds. We pay 33% of a scholarship to the UCSD Extension Program run by Gini Baker. Gini also chips in 33% so the student pays only 33% to complete the course. We do this a few times each year. Have a fund raising Award Dinner to give your awards to the recipients and ask medical centers, clinics, etc to sponsor a table for their lactation staff. This is generally small $ to them and major $ to you. Have a silent auction at the event with donated goods. 20

21 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Publish a Breastfeeding Resources Guide for your area and ask BF Boutiques, stores, centers to advertise their services and goods in the Guide. IBCLCs can be listed if they are a member of the Coalition. Various levels of membership can be designed to include different amount of information and a link on your website to their website. Publish a newsletter and have a Facebook page that solicits input from all coalition members. List events members are having, current articles from the literature in summary, and what is happening in breastfeeding locally and nationally. Have a table at a community event in your area and pass out flyers or brochures Engage in political action that pertains to breastfeeding and healthcare in general. Encourage Breastfeeding Grand Rounds at your medical center for World BF Week. SDCBC LIQUID GOLD
