Our Chapter luncheon was well attended and a great networking event for attendees from all across Ohio. Member Highlights: Did you know that the first Ohio NATP treasurer from 26 years ago is still a member-our appreciation goes to Edgar Kimble of Wickliffe, OH. Our chapter founder and first president, Mary Ann McClure is still at it in Athens, OH. Nancy Brunemann Ohio Board President 2016 was a great year for our Nomination Committee, we had more applicants than we have had in many years. This year you reelected Tim Bright, Teresa Alley, EA and Rick Sealscott CPA. We would also like to welcome our newest board member Janice Harshman, EA. We as a board and a nomination committee are very excited to see what 2017 has in store for us, not only in our offices but your Ohio Chapter NATP. Similar to every year we have a need to either reelect current board members, who s term is expiring, or elect general members of Ohio NATP to our leadership team. So if you are interested in serving on Ohio s NATP board I would like to personally invite you to request an application; it s never too early. You can expect many changes in our challenging field of work! New Deadlines Starting in 2017, for the 2016 reporting year, both the W-2 and 1099-MISC recipient copies need to be submitted by January 31, whether by paper or electronic filing. To make it even more interesting, the new filing deadline for Forms 1099-MISC only relates to nonemployee compensation reported in box 7. Otherwise, the due date for Forms 1099 is February 28 if filing by paper or March 31 if filing electronically. The penalties for late filing have increased as well. For the penalty schedule, visit New Security Practices from Software Providers The IRS, state tax agencies and software providers announced that they have made changes for 2017 to help prevent identity theft. Some changes will happen in the background, invisible to you and your clients. Additional elements will be transmitted with each return to help strengthen authentication procedures. Over 20 states are also working to create a program to flag suspicious refunds. What you will see is that most software providers are planning to introduce password requirements to use the program. The password will likely expire after 90 days and many providers are adding a feature where the software logs you out after a certain period of activity. Ever wonder if sharing a password was wrong, even if for the right reasons? For fiduciaries and family members who are dealing with online accounts and digital property of an incapacitated or a deceased family member, the concern remains that accessing the incapacitated or deceased person s online accounts and digital property, could it be a crime under federal or state law? Fiduciaries and family members should review and consider carefully the applicable Terms of Service Agreement before using a shared password or otherwise accessing a Web site in violation of the Web site s access rules. For those who want to be proactive in this area, you may download a copy of the My Digital Audit which is a 9 page pdf form that was created for writing down important information about your passwords, online accounts, and digital property. The mission is to help veterans develop selfreliance and independence by providing access to the resources they need to successfully manage life transitions. This was featured as a no solicitation event, which translates that many generous attendees gave what they could during the day. Other attendees were very thankful to have someone on site to discuss the resources that are available since they knew of someone needing immediate help. Sometimes its not always about the money, it s the about the caring and the networking to get to the right person or place. Ohio chapter board members got quite creative this year when getting ready for the charity raffle held at the Annual Conference in September. Their generous donations resulted in 15 baskets raffled off and 3 giveaway prizes to attendees. Net take on the day for the charity, VoiceCorps, resulted in $770 to help their cause. VOICEcorps is a 24/7 radio station that serves people who cannot read the printed word. It is the only service of its kind for people with blindness, vision impairment or other disabilities in Columbus, central and southern Ohio.
