2 Counselor s Corner A Note from the Social Worker Paula Alexander, LCSW Empathy: Putting Yourself In Someone Else s Shoes Today we heard from Judy Freedman, MSW, LCSW who shared her research on the importance of empathy. Empathy is the ability to recognize and understand the feelings of others and showing that you care with supportive and compassionate words or actions. The benefits of empathy are that it helps us connect with others, helps us and others feel better, heightens self-esteem and enhances academic performance, to name a few. Empathy training begins at home by helping your children identify and give names to feelings, teaching them coping skills for stress and negative emotions, allowing opportunities to manage loss disappointment and failure, and talking about different points of view. E= ENRICH your child s feelings vocabulary M= MODEL empathic responses P= PRAISE your child for their empathic words and actions A= ASK questions that encourage empathic responses T= TAKE ADVANTAGE of situations and interactions for discussions H= HONOR your child s feelings Y= Share YOUR feelings and experiences, when appropriate Hello all, Nurse s Notes How can we complain about the weather we have been having this week except it is a little scary to be able to put the top of a convertible down in February. Well I did on several occasions this week. Lucky Me! So far we have talked about Burn Safety and Heart Disease as being in February. This week we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Gavin Green Sr. and Dr. Gavin Green Jr. to our SK and PK 3,3/4, and 4 year old classrooms. For those who do not know, the Drs. Green are dentists, and yes, February is also Dental Health Month. The fun part of having the Drs. Green is that Dr. Green Jr. was a student at FHC in my tenure and it is a delight to see him all grown up and pursuing such an awesome profession. The father and son duo talked to the children about why it is so important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. They gave them good facts about how many teeth they have in their mouths now, and how many they will have as adults. They explained that the enamel on our teeth is the hardest substance in our bodies, even harder than bone, and why it is important to keep it healthy and clean. They also talked about good food for teeth and not so good food for teeth. The students had a great time, but I think the Drs. Green also had a great time with our students. I hope you all have a wonderful, safe and healthy weekend. And don't forget to brush and floss your teeth.
