1 Shady Oaks Bulletin November Parents Association for People with Disabilities Shady Oaks Camp Newsletter Upcoming Events SOB Meeting Sun. November 8 th 12:00pm All Parents Meeting Sun. November 8 th 1:00pm Board of Directors Meeting Sun. November 8 th 2:00pm Director s Corner Carson Community Days November 11 th - 14 th Howdy all, As the leaves start to fall off the trees and the weather turns markedly cooler, the camp season seems like it was so long ago. Our immediate attention shifts to raking and burning leaves and other grounds maintenance. As usual, we are always in need of volunteer groups and individuals to help with raking leaves away from buildings so Greg can go around with the vacuum and pick them up. If you would like to help, go ahead and give Greg a buzz ( ) and setup a time to come one out and enjoy this beautiful fall weather! Remember we also take community service volunteers as well! So it s time for us all to rest and kick back and we can think about camp 2016 in a couple of months.wrong! Right now is our prime fundraising time and we have a few good ones going on now. Our lottery raffle, pie cards, Carson s Days, and brick fundraiser are just a few of the things we are currently doing to help raise funds for next summer s camp time. We need as much help as we can get to make our 69 th summer a reality so please get involved! Soon we will also begin planning for our 6 th annual Dinner Dance (roaring 20 s) next April 22 nd, If you would like to be on the committee, please let me know ASAP so you can be get in on the ground floor of our best dance yet! Well friends, I hope everyone has a happy and safe thanksgiving. Hope to see everyone at the meetings on Sunday, November 8 th. Until next month. Happy Thanksgiving Good Times, Scott Steele Executive Director
2 Fundraising Shady Oaks Camp Daily Pick 3 Raffle Carson Community Days November 11 th - November 14th To purchase your Carson Community Days coupon book please contact Mary Pisano at or agnesmpisano@hotmail.com 1000 tickets will be sold numbered Tickets are $10 each Every day during the month of February 2016, the Illinois Daily Game (evening Drawing) numbers are picked. Whoever has that EXACT number is the winner for that day. The payout is $100 per day and $150 on Sundays. Not bad for a $10 ticket!! Also, if the same number is pulled during the month (and yes, it happens) you win again! You have to match the numbers in the Exact order and not in reverse or any other combination. Example, If 258 is pulled, only 258 wins (not 285, 528, 852 etc.) We will keep track of the drawing every day. One ticket gives you 29 chances to win!! (LESS THEN 200 TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE!) Contact Lori McAleavy for tickets mcaleavy1@comcast.net Just a piece of the pie. Shady Oaks Camp is partnering together With Baker Square We will be offering 2 types of pie cards. A Fruit or Baked pie card cost $12.50 A Cream pie card costs $15.00 Checks or money orders made out to Shady Oaks Camp. Families will receive half of the profit made On each pie card that they sell. There is no expiration date on the cards So you can stock up for next year. Please contact Mary Pisano at or agnesmpisano@hotmail.com If you have any questions or Would like to place an order. 3 Fundraising cont. We will be running an exciting new fundraiser this year. With the help of volunteers, we will be constructing a wishing well/fountain in the middle of camp and leading up to the well will be a memorial brick pathway. We are partnering with polar engraving to sell engraved bricks for this memorial walkway. 4 x 8 bricks will be $ ($ if you would like a replica mini brick) and can be purchased through the polar engraving camp website 100% of profits will go to support SOC! By purchasing a brick, you will not only be immortalizing your occasion or loved one, but also be providing much needed funds to SOC. Bricks may also be customized to include your business logo or other graphic image from a catalog of clip art. Page 3
4 Thank You Congratulations to camp supporters TEAM CITGO, Scout Silas Rea and Scout Nick Sulich for receiving the Homer Glen Community and Nature in Harmony award for all their hard work this past year at camp. Shady Oaks Camp itself was also a recipient of the award. Thank you to Scout Ryan Reid who at the ripe old age of 12 completed his Eagle Scout project at camp on Saturday, September, 26 th. For Ryan's project he replaced over 150 feet of rotting fence across from dorm 9. Ryan, along with all of the volunteers who showed up to help him, did an amazing job! A big thank you to Jeff Kolmodin and Gallagher Asphalt for coming out to camp to do some much needed asphalt repair up by the dining hall as well as to CITGO Lemont Refinery for their generous donation of a tractor with pull behind mower. We d like to extend a generous thank you to John Klein, Danette Gotch & Pam Franckowiak for their donations to the Shady Oaks Garage sale in October. Thanks to all of you who donated items, volunteered your time or came out and shopped, we raised over $1,600!!! Another thank you to Laurie Harff for yet another selfless donation. We appreciate your ongoing support and kindness! Volunteer We need volunteers to sell coupon books at Carson s in Orland Park Starting September 1 st November 10 th. Times are from 10am to close every day in 2 hour increments. They have 5 doors we can cover so could use up to 5 volunteers per day. In store book sales WILL go toward your child s camp time for summer of 2016! To volunteer contact Mary Pisano at or agnesmpisano@hotmail.com. Page 4
5 Misc. No need to stand in line on Black Friday!! Why not do your shopping online this year and help support Shady Oaks Camp at the same time by shopping through the IGive online mall. Every time you shop at any of the 1,000+ online stores in the IGive network, a portion of the money you spend benefits Shady Oaks. It s a free service, and you ll never pay more when you reach a store through IGive. In fact, smart shoppers will enjoy Igive s repository of coupons, free shipping deals, and sales. To get started, just create your free I Give account. Follow the link To the I Give mall register, and start shopping. It s that easy! Also, new users who download the IGive button and SOC will receive a $5.00 bonus for each new user. Please tell all your friends and family. Thanks everyone, and happy shopping!
