1 EAST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Advancement South Gate Educational Center (SGEC) Wish Tree Comments Qualitative Analysis Summary: This report was prepared for Ming-huei Lam, Dean of SGEC, which provides results of a thematic analysis and wordcloud generation (by category) of comments provided by students at SGEC for the Wish Tree. Notes: The categories, Campus, Facilities, and Other were difficult to define. Therefore, it was also difficult to reliably code comments into Campus, Facilities, and Other with high confidence. It is recommended that subthemes and wordclouds for these categories be interpreted with caution. Source: Data was provided by Ming-huei Lam on December, 20, Students from SGEC were asked to provide comments on paper ornaments for a wish tree. There were a total of 398 comments. These comments allow SGEC the opportunity to receive students feedback regarding a variety of topics and issues pertaining to SGEC. The Excel data file containing the transcribed comments was first cleaned and prepared for analyses. Subthemes were generated upon reviewing all comments by theme. Comments were then carefully coded/grouped into corresponding themes. Note, comments could had overlapped between subthemes. There were 17 main themes: Security/Safety; Parking; Food/Café; Student Services; Library; Bookstore; Clubs/Activities; Shuttle/Bus; Courses; Hours of Operation; Tutoring; Health Center, Child Care/Development; Computer Lab; Customer Service; Campus, Facilities, Other. Also, words clouds were generated for each category. Only words with minimum frequencies of two or more are displayed in the word clouds. The size of words in the wordcloud is indicative of their frequencies. In Table 1, themes, subthemes, example comments, and wordclouds are presented. 1 P a g e
