3 3 LAST WEEK POLIO EVENING MON 5 NOV JOINT MEETING OF THE NAPIER & AHURIRI ROTARY CLUBS Some challenges now are the post-polio survivors and the coping with the need of equipment and support as they have An early mix & mingle then seated for Dinner to cover any Rotary Club business. Then we had the privilege of Penny Humphries, a local family from Havelock North and adventurous children travelling the world, talk with the meeting. Penny works for the Health Board in Hawkes bay, this was not always the case, having worked for Children and Young Person s Service. Penny is well qualified with degrees and experiences in life. Born in the 1950 s at 15 months Penny contracted polio in 1953 before Christmas and so began Penny s and her family s journey through life. Push on through was the moto, the services that were provided Penny was very positive about. They were basic but that was then, and it was the best that could be done, and it worked. Penny spared us no details and had us all enthralled in her experiences including when her legs gave out and Penny realised, she would need a wheel chair. The Chair gave her freedom again after her struggles. Penny mentioned her view of the world changed things such as looking up at people s nose hair by default gave us all a chuckle. grown older and their needs changed. The need to get support prior to 65 as eligibility wains at that point. Penny covered off many other aspects that we all took on board and then wen t to a guest panel to see if there is anything, they and we Rotary can do. The Panel comprised Rickie Pike, Ash Peterson, Bruce Peterson and Will van Asch. The Problem Solvers. Rickie owns and operates We Can Engineering. Ash is Principal Research Engineer (Cardio) for Medtronic USA but lives in Napier. Bruce owns and operates Aerospread, a leading Aerial Topdressing
4 4 business and does a whole lot of other stuff. Will owns and operates the Hawke s Bay Express. 3. What equipment and support can be put in place to aid prevention of falls and the resultant fractures and rehabilitation. 4. State of the art bracing Dynamic bracing Discussion was broad and focused in on re-establishing support networks, mobility support from elbow crutches, wheel chairs to Segway s, carbon fibre fittings and supports, blades, ways to finance group purchase, improving or providing a web site to provide support to those caring for polio and motoneuron sufferers. Discussion about the different foundations and the Australian resources. We can work with the following: 1. Re-establishing support networks 2. Home support rather than entering into Aged care facilities early More to come I am sure. Penny mentioned the following sites and an article (click on this link to view) on Gordon Jackman and the effect state of art braces had on his situation that relates to item 4 above. A spark has been struck let s see what it will lead to. SERGEANTS SESSION Sergeants Session and raffles kicked off Local Polio project fund raising.
